At 33 years old, Akwa Ibom State, the land of limitless possibilities, is in such a dark economic quandary that there is no silver lining is in sight.

Unfortunately, Government has chosen in some cases to downplay or hide stark realities of our economic doom and gloom. There are so many uncertainties and setbacks threatening to flush out every gained before year 2015.

Today in Akwa Ibom State:

1. Inflation rate is 13.2% (national) and surging.

2. Unemployment rate Is 45.2%. Most Akwa Ibomites born at State creation are either unemployed, underemployed or unemployable.

3. Mounting debt is now at about N240 billion, which is three times more than total loans sourced by the Gov. Godswill Akpabio administration.

4. Budget 2020 has been reviewed downward by 38.8% to N195 billion due to projected revenue shortfall.

5. Rising prices of already scarce foodstuffs due to a dysfunctional agriculture sector. The coconut, tomato and cassava planting initiatives have failed woefully.

6. There is no workable poverty alleviation or food security policy.

7. HIV/AIDS prevalence rate is highest in Nigeria and residents can hardly afford cost of services provided by the dilapidated healthcare sector.

8. Struggling cottage industries do not contribute anything to the national GDP. Many have shut down or are operating under capacity.

9. Education sector is ripping apart because of poor funding and the COVID 19 pandemic.

10. Ibom Air operates on government bail out, but continues to lease small aircraft despite severe slump in the aviation sector.

11. There is no more subsidy on petroleum products, including petrol and aviation fuel.

12. Roads across the State are falling apart or flooded over because of sub standard construction or poor maintenance culture.

Despite all of the above and much more, Government is incapable of setting its priorities right.

Why the hurry to complete the construction of a "best in Africa" airport terminal building when the global and national aviation sectors are tanking and all airlines in Nigeria are begging for government bail out?

Best answer is that the current Akwa Ibom State Government is insensitive and grossly dysfunctional.

We elect incompetent people into power and then turn around to criticize them for not doing well.
