Nollywood actor and the member representing Surulere at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot has came under attack by Nigerians on social media.

The actor cum politician is being criticised over his alleged involvement in a bill calling for regulation of social media.

UK-based Nigerian doctor, Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya had earlier alleged that the Lagos State House of Assembly is developing a bill to regulate and control speech on social media and Desmond Elliot is said to be one of those pushing the bill.

“The plan is to deny the Lekki Massacre,’ the doctor claimed.

The actor is rumored to be at the forefront of a bill which is advocating for sensor of tweets regarding the Lekki Massacre.

Reacting in anger, several Nigerians including celebrities like Adekunle Gold expressed their shock at the report.

It will be recall that armed men in military uniform on the night of 20 October 2020, attack Nigerians protesting against police brutality in the country, in which many were reported dead.

In a report on 21 October, Amnesty International stated that at least 12 protesters were killed in what the organisation described as “extrajudicial executions”.

Reacting to the attacks, Elliot in a two minutes video posted on his Instagram account denied the alleged.

In the video, he said; “Please, I beg of you, I beg us and everyone. This is not true, it is totally unfounded. Dr Olufunmilayo, why don’t you even verify? Aren’t we going through a lot already? It is not true, period.”

He further added that; “No State House of Assembly has the jurisdiction to pass any bill like this, it is not possible. It simply lies on the exclusive list on the federal level. You can’t. Every member has a right to say something but you can’t.

“The only thing I said towards social media was that the celebrities, social influencers and motivational speakers should know we have followers so we should please cut down on the hate narrative. Everyone is going through so much right now.”

Reacting to the Actor's video, Olufunmilayo in a tweet to counter Elliot's video insisted that the Lawmaker is lying.

“Dear Desmond Elliot, Thanks for your quick correction. In the spirit of honesty and transparency, can you please release to the world what you said about celebs and influencers, can you also let the whole world see the video of what you said about social media regulation?,” he questioned.

In another tweet, the Doctor wrote; “On today’s plenary session, I have reliable information Desmond Elliot blamed celebs/influencers for the carnage and went ahead to advocate social media regulation bill.”

To backup his claim, Olufunmilayo shared a link to the video of the plenary. He, however claimed that the video has been tampered with.

“Dear Desmond Elliot, If the State House of Assembly have no powers on social media regulation, then why bring it up at plenary? Why advocate for something you have no powers over, as a lawmaker?

“Why blame celebs/influencers for saying what everybody saw but govt wants to cover?,” the Doctor queried the Lawmaker in another tweet.

Olufunmilayo further urged the lawmaker to release the video where he spoke about celebrities and influencers in the assembly.

During an APC campaign in Edo state, Desmond Elliot said he was happy to be a slave to Tinubu, he said there was nothing bad in being a slave to another person or a godfather. This was despite the obvious fact that Edo people wanted so much to break away from bad political influences. It is clear that somebody like Desmond Elliot will always support evil policies as long as the godfather supports it, he has no mind or idea of his own except that of the godfather. I am not surprised if he even supports anti-social media bill, Ruga, protests ban and other evil bills.

It is true that every man has a price but Desmond's own is just a few shekels. He has lost his credibility long time ago. He is doing all this because of money he's getting now. His name is already in the book of infamy

Olufunmilayo the international serial rapists and propagandist should face his practise. If he is not sharing fake news about the UN 30 days protest rule, he will be lying about treason flag. Nigeria needs social media bill to punish fake news spreader. If you are not sure of a news, don't spread it, it is that simple.

Lol! Desmond, my oppressors?! grin. There are so many kids on Nairaland. First, I'm in the upper middle class.
So, before Desmond became a politician, I had made money big enough to bankroll his entire campaign.

Secondly, using uncouth language can not necessarily make you feel better, it only adds to your misery. It's like a caffeine-loaded drink, once the effect of the caffeine wears off, you go back to your despondent self.

My advice, quit being a keyboard warrior, work hard and liberate yourself...and stop blaming government and making imaginary enemies out of successful people.
