Massive destruction too heavy for Lagos – South-West senators

The South-West caucus of the Senate on Tuesday lamented the destruction of public and private properties in Lagos after the #EndSARS protest turned violent.

The lawmakers described the attacks as ‘orchestrated tragedy’ and called for a thorough investigation.

The senators, who noted that the burden of rebuilding would be too much for Lagos alone, promised to get the support of the National Assembly and the Federal Government to assist the state in recovering.

They spoke during a visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to commiserate with him on the loss of lives and properties in the state.

The delegation was led by Senator Ajayi Boroffice, who represents Ondo North senatorial district.

Boroffice expressed worry that many youths working in the businesses that were destroyed would be rendered jobless, adding that it would take time for owners of affected businesses to recover, given the extent of losses.

“Adequate decisions had been taken by the government to attend to the demands of the protesters. Of course, some of the demands require constitutional amendment and cannot be done immediately. The Senate showed its readiness to look into the issues with the necessary amendments. So, it was unnecessary for the protest to be prolonged to the point of being hijacked by those with violent agenda,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu, in his response, expressed concern that some Lagos communities had become vulnerable to crimes following arsonists’ attacks on police stations and facilities housing security operatives.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, has reiterated the commitment of the state government to the well-being and security of Lagosians.

Speaking on Lagos Television about the recent crisis in the state, Omotoso said the state governor identified with the #EndSARS protests, addressed the youth and even took their demands to the President to affirm his support for their just cause.

He said the judicial panel of inquiry instituted by Sanwo-Olu was a focused step towards serving justice and compensating individuals and families who suffered rights abuses from SARS operatives.

Things wouldn't have gone this bad if Buhari had simply come out and address the youths within the first few days of the protest

The Lekki massacre, deaths of both police and civilians in different parts of the nation, the wanton destruction and lootings would all have been avoided

There is so much we don't know about this issue, firstly the incident is over exagerrated and information need to be clear. people who were said to be dead by the shootings are coming out daily to debunk the claim and say they are very alive, old pictures of an nysc drama scene and others are being used to justify the massacre.
If people really died do we need all this false claims!

Where are the families of the victims, names of those who died, these things should be clear by now.

The soldiers that shot, should be questioned, DJ switch should be questioned as well.

Nigerians deserve the truth and not just some sympathetic baseless charade!

If you ever had a stake in Lagos, there's no way you would go to your local police station, your bus park, your bank to burn it.

Only a bastard would so such a thing.

The way SW politicians are personalising this, you will think destruction only happened in Lagos.

Most of those politicians were quiet when the protest was still very peaceful, some of them even engaged the agberos that tried do disrupt and attack the protests. Now they are crying about infrastructural damages that could have been avoided, if they were more active in their duties.

I believe they are making all these noise in order to get more money for rebuilding. More money for looting per se.

I rarely hear them talk about the main issues, which is, the root of the problem. That main issue if not addressed might bring a greater destruction in the future.

Nonsense.
Lagos should man up, grow balls like a man and start rebuilding. After all, Igbo cities suffered more than this and rose from ashes.
NO excuse

Sounds like an excuse to use more of our Niger delta oil to fix the southwest

Not being tribalistic, just saying..

No one is asking my governor his Excellency Governor Obaseki how he is going to fix the massive damage in Edo state !!

No one is even talking of the damage in my state that is far worse than that of Lagos

Until we stop all this regional media biases and tribalism Nigeria won't move forward
