Groundnut is a highly nutritious nut and a very important source of edible oil. Nigeria annually produces 1.55 million metric tons of peanuts and is currently the largest producer of peanuts in Africa and the fourth largest in the world.

It is a rainforest and savanna crop and Nigeria is one of the major producers of peanuts in other countries of West Africa; Ghana, Liberia, Niger, Mali etc. Groundnuts can be grown twice during the early year (March – April), late planting (August – September).

However, groundnut cultivation is still attractive in the country and you can grow more than 5 metric tonnes per hectare.

Interestingly, groundnut cultivation can be done in wide environments. However, it is planted mainly in the northern part of Nigeria as they do very well in arid or semi-arid regions. In fact, more than 85% of peanuts produced under the control are from Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Bauchi, Borno and Adamawa.

Peanuts are a source of high-quality cooking oil. In addition, it can be crushed and made into a local peanut cake called Kulinkuli. It can be boiled or roasted and eaten with other food serving as an excellent source of protein. In children, peanut food is a large source of protein and can be used to treat protein-related malnutrition.
