BREAKING: Protect yourselves against attacks, IGP tells policemen

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has asked the personnel of the force to protect themselves against attacks from any quarter.
He said the men and officers have the right to defend themselves in case of physical danger.

The IGP spoke on Friday during an assessment tour of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Abuja, where he also encouraged the operatives who had abandoned the streets for the past five days following the killing of over 20 policemen in the violence that rocked the country.

Adamu alleged that the #EndSARS protesters were out to demoralise the personnel, adding that the government and the Nigeria Police Force would soon roll out packages for the families of the deceased officers.

He stated, “The unity of this country lies in the support that is given to police officers because if you are demoralised, the tendency is for criminals to take over the public space and the country is relying on us to make sure that the public space is not taken over by the criminals. So no amount of provocation, no amount of insult would make us shy away from our responsibilities.

“Inasmuch as we are aware that the government is behind us; so, we would encourage you to keep performing your duties. We would encourage you to be professional, to be civic, but if anybody touches you, if anybody comes to assault you, you can also protect yourself.

“When we talk of human rights, the police are human; so, the rights of police officers would also be protected. So, we are sending the message that legally, we have the right to protect ourselves but while we are doing that, we make sure that until we are endangered.”

Hmm...very weighty words from the IGP...they have just gotten the go ahead to down anybody when they feel like, and then place a weapon beside him to make it look like self-defence.

composure:

I repeat...
Is the police the problem of Nigeria.

As a matter of fact, they are one of our major problems...a country without security of lives and properties rarely prosper.

And if the NPF can't protect us, they should at least leave us be instead of bullying, stealing from and killing us. Shikena

when SARS and other policemen were killing, looting, harassing, raping, brutalizing NIGERIAN NIGERIAN NIGERIAN youth on the streets like we are illegal migrants in our own country where we have rights... Why didn't they announce to nigerian youths that youths have rights to protect ourselves?
or does this PROTECT YOURSELF have a different meaning?

it is sad that Nigeria ever got to this ugly level where people harm police men. I pray we all learn.

shey now the table has turned, police is strongly talking of HUMAN RIGHTS.

so i’m not entitled to my opinion or is it you that can’t express your self decently?. just pray you or your loved ones fall victim and u will understand how bad.so policeman will just be standing and people will go and mob him,who is dead brain here?,useless mofo
Omojolaray:
so if u be popo if dem wan mob u and u get riffle u go just dey look abi say na weytin.... Just open mouth without feelings dead brain
we are in deep trouble in this country,IGP is saying this...so the guns they carry is to protect them,we the masses are just defenseless in this country.no simple sympathy for thousands of innocent people the police has killed.

Nawo o every man for him head.

Same police that caused global embarrassment when they arrested and detained a goat for armed robbery...
Beside they should also take note that Murder/ armed robbery are offences without bail & that's why police, to punish victims severely, use that as a favourite.

The Judiciary has a role to play in ensuring that the police provide enough hard evidence on day 1 to warrant holding the suspect without bail

The IG has indirectly directed the police to kill unarmed civilians. Is that the best you can do to boost the morale of your already defeated police force.

This statement from IGP is barbaric and Can lead to many things. IGP is also right because it's an insult to them seing army robbers, hoodlums thugs coming to Attack them without defending themself. For me now i am saying that Criminals should be careful and don't challenge police. IGP should also train police to behave themselve well and be careful on unarmed civilians either on protest or anything to avoid future choas and crisis.
