WTO DG: Okonjo-iweala Ready To Resume, Awaits ‘appropriate Time’ by Officialhorlah(m): 7:44am On Nov 07, 2020
Former Nigeria’ s Minister for Finance, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, is ready to resume as the Director- General of the World Trade Organisation, her spokesperson , Molly Toomey, has said .
This is as the WTO DG candidate also said she is awaiting “ further progress at the appropriate time ” after the trade body postponed its selection meeting.
The WTO had postponed indefinitely a meeting where members are expected to pick a new Director -General after the United States blocked the favoured candidate , Okonjo -Iweala .
The WTO ’s 164 member states had been due to gather Monday to choose between two remaining candidates to head the organisation , Okonjo -Iweala and South Korean trade minister , Yoo Myung - hee.
After the postponement of Monday ’s meeting, her spokeswoman told AFP that “ Dr . Ngozi is very grateful for the WTO ’s support and she’ s ready to get to work as soon as possible .”
In a tweet, Okonjo -Iweala said she remained positive despite the postponement.
“ Thank you @ WTO for today’s step in the formal recording of my leading position as Most Likely to Attract Consensus for WTO DG. Every step is important . ‘Look forward to further progress at the appropriate time . # Positivityalltheway ,” she tweeted late on Friday.
After gradually whittling down the initial list of eight candidates , the troika last week tapped Okonjo -Iweala as the one most likely to obtain the needed consensus to take the helm.
But the United States opposed Okonjo - Iweala as the consensus candidate to lead the WTO .
The US said it is supporting Myung -hee , to become the DG of the WTO because she is a “ trade expert” .

They just want Biden to be sworn in first. With Biden administration, US will endorse Ngozi.
Biden doesn't care about China economic dominance like Trump.

They can wait for him. January is too far. I think they are playing a dangerous game which I am not comfortable with here.
The election proper (or ratification) was initially scheduled for Monday, 9th November, why postpone it?

Because America is not yet ready?

Because, even the election is held next Monday, Trump and America are presently rattled and occupied with elections, they won't make any meaningful impact. Neither will they be able to stop Iweala.
