The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has opposed
a suit seeking to remove the Ajami (Arabic)
inscriptions on naira notes.

It told the Federal High Court that it would cost
the country a “colossal sum of money” to
discard the existing notes and print new ones
without Ajami.

The CBN said Ajami is not a symbol or mark of
Islam but an inscription to aid non-English
speakers who are literate in and use Ajami for
trade.

The apex bank made the submission in a counter-
affidavit to a suit filed by a Lagos-based
lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, before Justice
Mohammed Liman.

Omirhobo argued that the Arabic inscriptions on
the naira notes portray Nigeria as an Islamic
state, contrary to the country’s constitutional
status of a multi-religious state.

He contended that this violates sections 10 and
55 of the Constitution, which makes the country
a multi-religious state.

Section 10 reads: “The government of the
Federation or of a state shall not adopt any
religion as state religion.”

Omirhobo prayed the court to restrain the CBN
from “further approving, printing and issuing
naira notes with Arabic inscriptions, bearing in
mind that Nigeria is a secular state”.

He also prayed the court to order the CBN to
replace the Arabic inscriptions with either
English language, which is the country’s official
language, or any of Nigeria’s three main
indigenous languages – Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo.

But in its counter-affidavit deposed to by
Abiola Lawal, the CBN argued that “the Ajami
inscriptions on some of the country’s currencies
do not connote any religious statements or
Arabian alignment”.

The apex bank maintained that contrary to
Omirhobo’s claim, the Arabic inscriptions were
not a threat to Nigeria’s multi-religious status.

I am sure that if there was anything islamic/unchristian about the Arabic inscription, churches in Nigeria would have stopped accepting Naira offerings to Jesus.

when will Nigerians understand that even the Arabians can't read Ajami.

just like how the native English speakers can read nor understand Yoruba words like "Labalaba" or Igbo words eg "Biko" despite writing them in Roman script.

Ajami is Hausa in Arabic style , it's the first writing style in Nigeria and it has been in existence and begin used in the northern part of Nigeria before our colonial master introduced us to western education and writing in Roman script. and it has nothing to do with religion. even the Roman script was introduced to us by Christian missionaries and we adopted it to be our official writing style. it doesn't mean anything to feel hostile about.

the moment we stop feeling insecure about everything is the day I'm looking forward to , coz it's the day we start moving forward.

Arabic is a language
I am a Christian and I studied Arabic both in my secondary and a little bit of it in my University days.

If not that religion has divided us so much in this Country this call to remove this Arabic from the Naira wouldn't have been necessary.

Why is it that they did not use Hebrew, why Arabic.

Some people studied Hebrew in school also.

Putting Arabic in NIgeria's money is a breach of the constitution. If CBN could withdraw paper money from circulation there is no reason she can't withdraw money with Arabic inscription.

Arabic inscription in Naira and Nigeria millitary is a confirmation that NIgeria has adopted Islam as state religion. Which is contrary to the constitution. Anything outside indigenous languages and official language cannot be part of national material.

If you say this means nothing. Then we will start by adding to the NIgeria army's logo, "victory comes from Jehova alone", Victory comes from the god of iron alone" etc.we will do the same to the currencies. Since we have all agreed to be stupid.

In same vein, it's an insult and injustice to register Nigeria in an Islamic organization. These anomalies must be corrected.

I really don't have much explanation for you because I know your type and motive.

it seems you can understand Arabic for you to be insisting that the inscription on our currency is Arabic.

so help us with the translation , if you can't, then use Google translator or any other translator to translate it from Arabic into English and post the screenshot here. (if it's really Arabic as you claim, Google translator shouldn't have any problem translating it from Arabic)

if you can't do all that, then take some time to check the meaning of 'transliteration' in the dictionary. maybe by then you will understand if I say that the inscription on our currency is Hausa transliterated in Arabic style. just like how "ile laa n wo, ka to so'mo loruko. " is Yoruba transliterated in Roman script style, using Roman letters.

I guess you went to school, even if you didn't do history or language, you can always read the meaning of Ajami on Wikipedia, then you will understand how it was very common in Africa before colonization.

I'm a Christian but I don't know what you people gain in promoting religious intolerance.

Arabic is not the language of any tribe in Nigeria.

Whatever was written in Arabic should be written in plain Hausa, even Fulfude.

Why write a language on a Nigerian legal tender that is not spoken by any tribe in Nigeria??

Ignorance is a disease, any Arabian who reads the Arabic on the Naira won't understand what it means because it is a localised form of arabic called ajami. Before the English people came, the Hausas had derived the ajami for writing in Hausa language. Anyway you can spend 5s,10s and 20s if the ajami script written affects your mental condition.
