The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (M.E.N.D) has reiterated that the public as well as all oil companies must take its latest threats seriously and not be carried away by the reassurances of the Nigerian government and security services.

It warned in a new statement, signed by “Jomo Gbomo,” that on account of the attempts by Nigeria’s security services, “we may resort to carry out all bomb blasts without prior notification and then issue a statement of claim afterwards.”

It noted that since the government of Goodluck Jonathan has blamed its political opponents in other bomb attacks, MEND “will sit back and watch how the blame game will continue to be played out by the government after our statements of claims has being issued.”

It said it wished to avoid civilian casualties and therefore warned public to stay clear of any political gatherings or meetings of any sort “as we know our targets.

See full statement below:

”The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (M.E.N.D) wishes to strongly advise the general public and all oil companies to disregard all attempts by the Nigerian government and security services in dismissing our latest threat.

In light of these attempts by the Nigerian security services, we may resort to carry out all bomb blasts without prior notification and then issue a statement of claim afterwards.

Anyone caught up in these blasts due to their ignorance would only have themselves and the government to blame. The same government that would abandon the casualties in an unequipped teaching hospital while their family members travel abroad for medical treatment.

We gather that some agents from the United States are training some members of the Nigerian police force in bomb detection, detonation and making improvised bombs. We find this very laughable coming from a country that cannot guarantee its own citizen’s security with their overwhelmed prison system coupled with a useless and corrupt Nigerian police and security force that will end up selling this knowledge.

The government of Goodluck Jonathan has formed a habit of blaming its political opponents in other bomb attacks so when we start to strike, we will sit back and watch how the blame game will continue to be played out by the government after our statements of claims has being issued.

We finally reiterate our desire to avoid any civilian casualties and again strongly warn the general public to stay clear of any political gathering or meeting of any sort as we know our targets.

It is very obvious that these bunch of criminals are not members of MEND as they claim.I now see why GEJ said it was not mend that was responsible for the Independent day Bombing. The statement above is just same used by GEJ political opponent.Believe whatever you want, this threat is definately coming from BUHARI and RIBADU camp, they have also shown their love for Violence whenever the President is on a campaign tour in the North. This threat is to tactically warn crowds from going to GEJ campaign by them using fear as a weapon to persuade people not to attend his campaign, but alas! This threat will not stop us from Voting this Divine moving Train.GEJ/SaMBO!

It's quite obvious that you do not follow your country and her politics. 1st of oct last year, "MEND" planted a bomb and they have threatening ever since then. You have to agree that it is the same person that is committing these things now. Now Buhari and Ribadu did not know anything about it (the Independence day blast) because they did not know whether GEJ or they were even going to contest under there respective political parties. Moreover, they cannot fund such attacks.
Because of the above reasons, I think it has NOTHING to do with BUHARI OR RIBADU but if you had said NPLF or IBB then possible. Now, do you agree that you did not do any thinking before post?? Anyway, I still want to know your reasons

2011: Militants hold secret meetings with IBB, Buhari •Ex-military president given conditions
Written by Idowu Samuel and Emmanuel Adeniyi Monday, 06 September 2010

THERE are indications that President Goodluck Jonathan is yet to strike a deal with leaders of key militant groups in the Niger Delta to strengthen his chances of winning the South-South zone if he decides to run in the 2011 presidential election.

Indications to this effect emerged in the light of efforts by leaders of the militants, who had given up on the government amnesty initiative to engage presidential aspirants from the North in exploratory talks on how to fit into their presidential programmes.

Two leaders of militant groups which surrendered arms in the wake of the Federal Government’s amnesty had arrived in Abuja last week to hold talks with northern presidential aspirants, including General Ibrahim Babangida and General Muhammadu Buhari.

Nigerian Tribune learnt through aides of the aspirants that the militants complained that they were not being consulted by President Jonathan.

The militant heads were said to have canvassed a view that their full participation in the ongoing political process would enhance their resolve to finally discard the toga of militancy, just as they reportedly expressed dismay that their efforts to dissolve into the campaign programme of President Jonathan were not being appreciated.

It is not certain which specific roles the militants desired to play in the presidential campaigns of the aspirants, whom they reportedly met. However, it was disclosed that tentative agreements were reached by the campaign team of General Buhari that they should make a bold appearance during his inaugural campaign summit scheduled to take place in Abuja any moment from now.

Checks within the IBB campaign organisation revealed that none of the militant leaders was able to meet the Minna general in person, but reportedly met his aides in Abuja and told them about their desire to feature in his campaign programmes.

When the militants met with the representatives of the ex-president recently, Nigerian Tribune gathered that they vowed to support him if he agreed to a one-term tenure and hand over power to a candidate from the South-South geopolitical zone in 2015.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that Babangida was told to rescind his decision of handing over to a candidate from the South-East, choose a vice-president from South-South, implement the white paper of the Ledun Mittee committee and create additional states in the South-South geopolitical zone.

Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that the militants were working with notable South-South governors, who were said to be working underground for different northern presidential aspirants following their irreconcilable differences with President Jonathan.

I will find it very difficult to accuse Ribadu or Buhari om this issue but one thing is very clear; that statement is not from MEND!
It is ridiculous that MEND will decide to kill people simply because GEJ accused his opponents. It doesnt make sense at all.
These people are smart by half.
Again, when did mend begin attacking president's perceived failures in their statements?
Even under Obj, they never issued any statement that highlights failures in his government. Their only concern has always been oil facilities and personnel and nothing more.

It still beats me why people still count 'exoneratin MEND' as one of GEJ's sins.

Even if Buhari wins and tows the path of Jonathan by refusing to engage in all inclusive negotiations with every aggrieved section,I still see no end to the violence.

Unconditional release of Henry Okah and all freedom fighters followed by aggressive infrastructural development of the Niger Delta region is the only peaceful solution.

The other option is an all out war and complete defeat of militants. This option is applicable only when dialogue is exhausted because it will affect several innocent Nigerians and foreigners.

In a nutshell.Every informed Niger Deltan knows that the PDP government tried to apply divide and rule tactics as a solution to militancy. The North therefore does not in anyway influence MEND.The aggrieved faction is being haunted by the pro-Government faction with the aid of the army while the pro-Government faction are busy engaged in illegal bunkering.

I honestly don't think their concerns are justified. They receive enormous amounts of money as is, but do nothing with it. Ibori has $3 billion+ in his account, for pete's sake  undecided

Bayelsa supposedly hauled in $200 milion per month. And this is likely the least populous state in all of the south.

Why should anyone feel compelled to give them more money if they piss away what they get? Bayelsa should be more developed than Rivers State. . . yet it is not. Whose fault is that but their governors and leaders?

There is no accountability here. Until they take responsibility for their own failings, why should anyone sympathize with them?

Anyway, with Shell and these multinationals selling their onshore assets and attempting to move mostly offshore, perhaps option #2 that you mention becomes more feasible.

@eku_bear.Your views are that of civilized man but don't you think the boys in the creek are not as aware as you and I?

There is nothing the State Government can do in Bayelsa.Bayelsa has a very difficult terrain and requires equal attention with Abuja before any meaningful impact can be made infrastructurally. Our President was once the Governor and should have been aware of this.

As for the present MEND,they are merely fighting for recognition and equal treatment with the pro-Government Militants.Nothing more.
