The Federal Government has revealed why it has proven difficult to resolve the impasse surrounding the strike by Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) lecturers, Insidenaija reports.

Speaking on Channel’s Television programme on POLITICS TODAY on Friday, November 13, Minister for Labour, Chris Ngige said, the government cannot afford more than N30bn for reverization, as demanded by the union because the country is running a deficit budget.

“looking at the items demanded by ASUU, start with the ‘revelation’ the government offered the Union N30bn out of the negotiation it did in 2013, saying the reverization cannot be done through the budget, because the country is already running on a deficit budget,” Ngige said.

The minister said, there was a committee that has been inaugurated to look into the issue of funding, adding that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) is a reservation service.

According to Ngige, the Federal Government had offered N30b to all the unions in the universities and another N20b as a revitalization fund, totaling N50b during their meeting on October 15.

But, ASUU insisted that the N30bn Earned Academic Allowances offered by the Federal Government would be for its members alone, a demand the government team said was not feasible.

The minister noted further that, the Accounter-General said there was no more money and he called the ASUU leadership to convince their members to resume, but they refused.

He said, there has been a template designed to by the National University Commission (NUC), saying ASUU should take the money and share it amongst its members.

However, the minister faulted the Union method of the strike to table their demands before the Federal Government, saying there was a demand using strike in, 2013, 2017, and 2019.

When asked by the program moderator, what to tell Nigerian students about the ongoing strike?
Ngige said, the Federal Government led team would meet to negotiate ASUU leadership on Monday, November 16, and he is optimistic that they would call off the strike in one week time.

Most of our so called graduates only went to school to warm the benches.
Close the universities for a minimum of 5 years let our youth develop themselves in other aspects.

It seems the proposed strike by NANS is beginning to give them nightmares. If they like, they shouldn't reach a compromise by next week. The #ENDSARS protest will be a child play when compared to the impending protest.
