if you get the invite how are you planning to live in the u.s? do you have somewhere to stay? do you have money to live on until you are situated and you do know that a visitors visa doesn't permit you to work.

you have to realize in these days of 419/fraud a lot of people would be afraid to lend a helping hand even if they would want to. inviting you would mean sticking out their necks for you, a complete stranger.

it may be easier to register to attend a conference/short course in the US as longer as you can find a sponsor and raise the capital for the trip.

Visas are issued for time to enter the US. For example if you have a 6 months B1/B2 visitor visa, it means you can enter the US once within 6 months from the date of issuance, and how long you stay is decided at the port of entry. F-1 visa status will be granted for the period of time, or duration of stay required to complete the course of study.

There are people out there willing to help but because a good letter of invitation will contain some very personal info, people are very reluctant to do it. Suggest you talk to people in your circle who knows somebody in the US and can assist, and by the way don't forget Naija is World HQ for 419s.
