You are right my bro. A case of the banming of rice importation, Farmers prefer to sell the rice at equivalent of the imported price because they believe it is difficult to get the foreign rice thereby defeating Govt objectives in ensuring boom in local rice sales.
infact now i'm beginning to believe competition is better than protectionism. Because protectionism favours the manufacturers and oligarchs in Nigeria while, competition favours the consumers due to cheaper price.

Remember same applied to basic amenities like food we consumed, when the border is wide open and government allow people to import food and beverages, prices of these commodities were reasonable but when they shut the border inorder to promote our own agricultural activities, Nigerians have abused the policy by deliberately increase the prices of all these commodities just for thier selfish gain

That's a lie, i visited Peugeot showroom and i was surprised at the cost Peugeot vehicles as they are over 50% cheaper than their foreign counterparts. The only challenge is how many people buy new vehicles? Majority patronise Foreign used cars, so you may not be in the know.

You have a point there.

why is PAN complaining now?

where have they been all this while and what have they been doing since to make more cars more affordable for the citizens?
Re: PAN Faults FG's Plan To Reduce Import Duty On Vehicles by IBBG(m): 8:17am On Nov 20, 2020
Xisnin:

Why should the Nigerian made be affordable? You can't compare the product prices of companies who sell millions to those who sell thousands. The million company can afford to sell cheaper and still make a profit. We need the duty to make local manufactures competitive.
. By suffocating us with high price, and distributing inflation to other sectors of the economy.

For me it's a welcome development......those who still want to buy Peugeot will go for it.

When you can get a significant discount by Importing, nobody would buy.
Re: PAN Faults FG's Plan To Reduce Import Duty On Vehicles by samuelonyewueny(m): 8:22am On Nov 20, 2020
Greedy people....
Custom duty on cars is 70% of the value of the car in Nigeria. So in essence whoever buys a car abroad would almost sell the car at x2 the cost. Wicked Government & for what?? We don't make cars in Nigeria - we only assembly car parts.
In Europe where they make cars (BMW, PORSCHE, etc), their own import duty is 30% (which is fairly reasonable).
Senselessness in high places...

PAN should shut up! Who manufactures vehicles in Nigeria? They just assemble ckds, even bikes and keke are assembled, there is no local content.

The upholstery and tarpulins are all imported, even though these could be made locally.

The whole essence of increasing import duty was to make local manufacturers efficient enough to produce more at cheaper rates but it's like the prices of locally assembled cars have continued to soar instead. The problem in this country is just too many. undecided
That's the thing. You don't solve a problem by mitigating symptoms.
Imported vehicles have little impact on the availability and prices of locally fabricated ones.
Locally fabricated vehicles are expensive because the cost of producing them is high.
Poor power supply is the number one reason for that.

You are not a manufacturer.

Why do you think the average Nigerian goes for an imported foreign used 2007 Toyota corolla?

It's because it costs 2.2m. Which locally assembled car costs within that price range?

so our local manufacturers rather finish us off with exorbitant prices? Even in areas where production is relatively good, prices are still exorbitant, how does that help consumers?

Good move, ever since the hike in import duties. What have they achieved? They should look at the data, is there any positive correlation between increasing the import duties and development of the perpetual ailing automotive sector.

My thoughts exactly! What have they achieved for the common man since the hike? How much have they invested in R& D, abi is it just to cobble old technology together and fix high prices to suit govt overbloated supply contracts that they’re protesting for?

Long over due. When the import duties were high locally assembled cars was almost as expensive as their foreign counterparts, so the essence of hiking the import duties has already been defeated. What i've discovered with nigerian economics whenever an imported item is banned or import duties hiked in other to protect locally manufatured, instead of the locally manufactured goods to become cheaper and available, it becomes almost as expensive as the foreign goods, making the purpose of protecting locally manufactured goods defeated. I believe the problem is either we lack the capacity to produce the goods we are banning or our locally manufacturers are just greedy with hiking their price unecessarily for huge profit
As the case with Rice

The problem here is greed. How much is the cheapest innoson car? Innoson fox costs about 3.85million. The car self resemble toy, e no balance at all. Now how much is Benz C300 2008, you can get it for $2000 - $3,000 and pay import duty 750k so with 1.9 million your car done land. Which of the two cars depicts luxury? So the cost of locally made cars keeps increasing as naira keeps loosing value, while the cost of imported cars keeps reducing as the year goes by. Nija problems too many.

Re: PAN Faults FG's Plan To Reduce Import Duty On Vehicles by tasalanoni(m): 8:39am On Nov 20, 2020
The problem with our locally made goods is mostly a lack of quality. Competition is very essential for refined quality and that's the reason foreign goods with superior quality should be allowed entry into the Nigerian marketspace. Innovation and drive for improvement are non existent in our culture. PAN has been around for over three decades yet with very little impact in the automotive industry save for the 504, 505 and other models of the 80s. Same can be said of other consumer goods that are produced locally. Aba is the textile and leather hub of the country but nobody with a top-notch taste patronizes goods from there and that explains why the trade of secondhand clothes continues to flourish
Before now, locally grown and processed rice was almost inedible because the stone to rice ratio was almost 1 to 1. Competition against imported foreign rice made our local farmers up their game and for the first time de-stoning was introduced. Tarrif hike and import prohibition only enrich an already corrupt custom and smugglers who take advantage of porous borders to flood the market with contraband goods and continue to weaken an ailing local manufacturing sector.

Exactly. The purpose of closing borders is already defeated as inflation is everywhere. I don't see the reason why our borders still remains shut.

Nigerians have been so impoverished that they cannot afford brand new cars. Just forget it!
There is a PAN car on this forum for 30m. A mid range car for that matter.

Solution, duty should be reduced or removed on tokumbo cars for the general masses.
To encourage ckd assemblers such as PAN, government should patronise only locally assembled vehicles to support the local industry since they are the only ones that can afford new cars. Ie government agencies should by law only buy them and not imported vehicles.

For many average Nigerians, brand new cars aren't direct substitutes for 'tokunbo' vehicles. As such, clarifications need to be made on:

1) Whether the reduction applies to only tractors and tokunbo vehicles?

2) Will government being a big buyer of new vehicles, patronise made-in-Nigeria vehicles for its officials, joint ventures, the police, army etc.?
