No doubt, this states Benue & Taraba rings in your ears, when ever you hear them, but I like to refer them as the triangle with an inclusion of Plateau state.
They all belong to what is collectively called Middle belt state, but in actual sense they are North Central states.
They both share similar pattern of sequence, but are different in culture and tongue
Benue is made up of major Tiv and Idomas, , but have Igbos along it's boarders with Enugu, as ancestral residence, including igedes, Juckuns etc, while Taraba is made of majorly the Juckuns, Tibs, Fulanis, Chambas, Taroks etc.

AGRICULTURALLY:

For the sake of this write up, we will be moving our view to the agricultural activities of Ukum in Benue and other listed Lga in Taraba.

UKUM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA.

I sometimes refer to this lga as the yam lga, as it houses the largest mono crop (yam) market in the world. The hq of this lga is Sankara, and is is headed by a chairman, while the cultural head is the tor sankera.

Aside form Zaki Biam, the lga also houses other strategic places like Jootar,Kyado, and several other village. Security has greatly increased improved; very the past years due to the advances made by the Nigerian Security Forces, especially the Nigerian Army, through its operation in the area. The local militia warlord, a star to many was recently killed by the Nigerian army.

Zaki Biam.

This is one of the largest towns in Ukum LGA, and serves as the economic power house of the LGA, ad the only motor parks, banks (UBA, Access, and Unity Bank), are located here. The town beats it headquarters in development, I tend to refer to it as the hq.

The history of this town cannot be completed with mentioning the activities of the Nigerian Army Know as the "Zaki Biam Massacre".

For the fact that you don't even know the tribes that make up Benue, I don't think you have sufficient knowledge to open a thread about the state. There is so much you don't know. Go back do your research and come back

Zaki Biam Yam Market

This is know to some of us as the yam headquarter. As it implies, the market is the largest yam market in the world, being the fact that the market accounts for roughly above 60% of the yams sold in Benue state, being that Beneu account for more than 50% of the 70% of global yam output that Nigeria has.

The market is a daily market except Sundays. Trucks from majorly SS/SW/SE flock this town.
Due to previous insecurities in the area (which has greatly improved,, thanks to the Nigerian Army), trucks from far north usually frequent this market. They stopped when kidnapping, murder and robbery became rampant.

Yams in this market are sold in 100s called "kwoi", and for each hundred tubers bought, a certain amount of money is paid, know as the shade money. Marking of 100 tubers of yams is usually for 100 naira, but be could be bargained for less if you are buying bulk. 400 naira is paid for security, and a certain amount is paid for each hundred for LGA charge..

One could easily aget trucks going to any part of Igbo land, Lagos, Some part of SS (Warri, Oghara, Benin and PH),or sometimes Asaba, which is done using trucks that are passing the town empty.

Problem Of Zaki- Biam

~Charges: In comparison with other food market food stuff market across Nigeria, excluding SE market's, the amount of money paid on food produwc purchase in the town is high, with traders paying as high hundred to two hundred naira per bag, while in niegbouring Taraba is less, that aside, the amount of produce tax point on the Markurdi- Zaki Biam Express way is much, with an approximate distance of them every 100m (usually less), majority of them which are illegal, ( though the Benue state govt. is trying, but their effort is not enough), not to talk of the charges the Nigerian Police collect, or the Army collect from each vehicle that passes from the road, men from formations like Operation Zenda, Operation Whirl Stroke, all in turn tax vehicles that passes the road, which in turn inflates the price of food item. For example, if a trailer of cattle passes a check point, the fee is usually 1000 naira,( not less than 500 naira with pleading), there are more than 30 check point (legal and illegal), on the Makurdi - Zaki Biam express way, if the trucks refuse to pay, they delay them which in turn cause traffic gridlock, that of the produce guys is more than 100, infact most of them work with the security guys. (Legal & Illegal).

Security: Though to an extent, and thanks to the man of the Nigerian Army, and the Counter Terrosim Unit. In 2020, the major threat to security was eliminated, but there are pockets of threats to traders and travellers from dubious youths, and other forms of minor robbery in and outside the market. The key to surviving Zaki Biam is being extra careful and working in groups.

Finance: There are only three functioning banks in Ukum LGA, (Access Bank Plc, UBA Plc, Unity Bank Plc), due to the absence of major other players in the system and location, there is always an unending queue in the banking hall, hence putting pressure on the banking system, though the presence of POS operators snhelping matters, but it is important to note that they have their own limits.

KYADO YAM MARKET

In 2020, during the lockdown, the federal govt through it MSMS clinic intervained in the Zaki Biam yam. market by renovating it, removing their raffia roof, and replacing it with aluminum roofs, when this renovation was ongoing, there was need to find an alternative market, hence, the "Kyado International Yam Market".

Located in Kyado town, Ukum LGA, after Sankara, the lga hq, about less than 20km from Z/Biam, the market is the second largest yam market in Benue state, with 500+ yam stalls, and an from (personal estimate) of about 1000+ yam sellers.
"I see this as a rival to Zaki Biam"
Re: Understanding Benue & Taraba Agriculturally: An Overview Of Ukum, Gassol Ibi LGA by Onlinefarmstore: 4:45pm On Nov 29, 2020
A PERSONAL VIEW OF KYADO YAM MARKET

1. Was done as a rival to wukari yam market in Taraba state, as major sellers in Wukari where always coming from Venue, and due to the ethic clash between the juckuns and tivs. (this is based on random testimony from people privy with this).

2. A relatively new market as thus doesnt have the facilities enjoyed in Z/Biam

3. Relatively more secured than Z/Biam. ( According to locals, vigilant and security personnel- Army & Police).

4. The market is projected to be more cheaper in sales of tubers, but more expensive in taxes.

5. Market is relatively scanty as compared to Z/Biam, because it's just a new one.

Note: The " Kyado International Yam Market" is a new one, carved out the old Kyado yam market, which was moved from their main market.

TARABA STATE.

Located about 30km away from Z/Biam is the boundary between Benue and Taraba states, two brothers that never agrees. (Care is needed, but the largest ethnic group in Taraba are the Juckuns, which is headed by the "Aku-Uka of Wukari", which have their ancestry to the founder of the Hausa tribes. Though their are other rulers in Juckun land, but the the "aku-uka" remains the Paramount ruler.

Wukari Local Govt. Area.

Named after the lga hq, it is the largest town in this lga, and commands respect, it has the presence of several federal institutions like the Federal University, Wukari (FU-wukari), Federal Govt. College Wukari, Midium Security Correctional Facility wukari, (Prison), Nigeria Space Management Agency station, amongst other, while their is a private University intown named after the Founder of the Juckun tribe -Kwararafa University.

It boast of several financial institutions before the crisis, but sadly they are left with few now.

Wukari Lga host some major markets in Taraba state, and farms, but for the sake of this article, I will be focusing my attention on Daruwa, Bantaji and Wukari Yam market

DARUWA MARKET, "GRAINS HEAD MARKET IN WUKARI LGA".

Located about 20+km from Wukari town, this is an every Wednesday only market., and they sell majorly grains. The market host sellers from Wukari, Deruwa, within and outside wukari and ibi lga, with occasional visit from gassol lga sellers.

Another fact is that there is a Fadama 3 supported rice Mill around this market, and a number of private millers, from data from private consumers of the rice, it's one of the best.

BANTAJI MARKET "CATTLE MARKET".

This a cattle majorly market, in wukari lga, the market is every Tuesday.

The market is flocked by traders from all over Nigeria, because of livestock. Traders engaging in in dry meat business visit this market to process their meat before moving it to their final destination.

WUKARI YAM MARKET "KASUWA DOYYA"
Located in Wukari town, it is the largest yam market in Taraba state, this is an everyday market, and is seen by Juckuns as a pride, and as a rival to Benues' Z/Biam. Though yams are cheaper, it is important to note that most trucks are beginning to frequent here due to trust from Locals, and security reasons.
