The US embassy in Nigeria on Monday celebrated a Nigerian-born researcher Onyema Ogbuagbu for his role in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, Igbere TV reports.

Ogbuagbu is part of a team of researchers for Pfizer which jointly announced with BioNTech that a vaccine against COVID-19 had been developed.

The vaccine has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries with no safety concerns raised.

Tweeting on Monday, the US embassy commended Ogbuagbu for helping “the drug company Pfizer develop the first effective COVID-19 vaccine in the United States.”

“Nigerians contribute to the world in so many ways. Our hats off to Dr. Onyema Ogbuagbu at Yale who helped develop a COVID-19 vaccine,” the embassy said.

Igbere TV gathered that Ogbuagu is one of the twin sons of a former vice-chancellor of Abia State University Chibuzo Ogbuagu and a professor of sociology Stella Ogbuagu who was best graduating student of the 1974 class at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). His twin brother is an engineer.

He studied medicine at the University of Calabar, Cross River in 2003. After graduation, he interned at the Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, before proceeding to the US.

Many Nigerians across different tribes can do great things as long as they are given the right platform. If this Dr was from unn he wouldn't have been able to achieve it.

He led the Pfizer team. He is the figurehead.

An infectious diseases expert from Yale with experience in vaccine research and production.

You think that is rice and beans?

The US govt that is singling him out for special recognition don't know what they are doing.?

You're saying he led the team that developed the first coronavirus vaccine shocked
Where did you see that there?
The US embassy in Nigeria are the ones doing the recognition. They're trying to puff up us as usual. Like how one if them just said we have the fastest growing economy in Africa despite the recession.
If this dude made any reasonable contribution, they would have indicated the insights he made. Like I said before, anyone can be part of a team.

I think your main focus should be on how to relocate your family back to Damaturu. that you and your family have been staying in my tribe Yoruba doesn't mean we have accepted you people as one of us. nothing like that in our Yoruba culture. our Baale has instructed our community to fish out impostors like you living among us so that when the time comes it will be easier for us the real Omoluabis to send you back to wherever you comes from. my advice as a friend
