The Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, is known as the Oldest University of Technology in Nigeria, this is because it was established in the year 1980 under the administration of Nigeria’s First Executive President, Shehu Shagari.

At the time, the institution had no permanent site and the premises for learning was the Old Government Technical College (GTC). It was not until January 1982 that the then Imo State government approved a permanent site for the University.
