Police Detain PDP, INEC Staff Caught Tampering With INEC Materials

Author: Date: Mar 21st, 2011.

Oyo State Police Command has transferred the Head of Information Technology of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Osunlola Akinyinka and four  other suspects caught tampering with voters’ registers in the INEC Machine at Davies Hotel, Awolowo Area of Ibadan to the State CID, Iyangaku, Ibadan.

The suspects were caught tampering with the voters’ registers of the entire 33 local government areas in the state.

Disclosing this to P.M.NEWS this morning is the Oyo Police Public relations Officer, Mr. Tunji Ajimuda who stressed that the police is still investigating the case.

According to him, next action would be taken after the conclusion of the investigation, noting that anybody, no matter how highly placed, implicated would be prosecuted.

All attempts to get the Head of Information Unit of INEC, Mr. Ayodele Folami proved abortive.

Speaking on the development, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Adisa Baba Bolanta, confirmed that the four suspects arrested with the INEC staff are members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The suspects arrested around 7:30pm last Saturday who were firstly detained at Bodija Police Station were taken to Area police Command, Iwo Road before they were transferred to State CID.

Reacting to their arrest, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) chieftain in Oyo State, Alhaji Lam Adesina and Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN) stated that the only way credible elections could be guaranteed is that the state INEC commissioner and the state police commissioner should be redeployed.

Akintola alleged that most of the police bosses and INEC officials in the state have compromised their oath of office because of gratifications.
”Until when all those in such positions realise that their allegiance is to the country as a whole through the oath of office taken when appointed and not to the governor or the president, the kind of fear I’m expressing will always be there,” he said.

He stated that  the promise by INEC to conduct credible elections should not be taken on its face value, but to persistently ask the electoral agency the logistics being put in place to achieve the feat.

Adesina stated that the arrest of the suspects was a confirmation of his allegation that there is a rapport between Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State and INEC boss in the state.

However, Akala and PDP have denied that those arrested in connection with the incident are PDP members.

Akala, who spoke through his media aide, Dotun Oyelade, stated that Akala would not win the election in a fraudulent manner but on a clean slate going by the good work he has done.

This must be the handiwork of Gov. Akala (the oyato gov.) to get back to the Agodi govt. house by all means. Do or die politics at it again.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega has confirmed that five persons, including INEC staff, have been arrested in connection with the illegal possession of three Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines in a hotel room in Ibadan, the Oyo State, and promised that they would not go scot-free.

Jega who fielded questions from members of civil society groups in Abuja, yesterday, explained that one of the suspects was a top staff of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department of the commission.

“We have sent somebody to take over ICT in Ibadan and we have certified the voter register which makes the attempted manipulation difficult,” he explained, pointing out that this was because the present commission had made it clear from the beginning that it was no longer business as usual.

Describing the development as unfortunate, Jega said the ICT personnel acted without the consent of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Ayo Adakeja as the ICT official was said to have taken permission to go out.
By this ugly incident, the INEC chairman argued that it was clear that there were still a few bad eggs within the system whose conduct was bound to smear the image of the commission.

Said he: “What has happened in Ibadan is very unfortunate. The head of the ICT Unit in Ibadan was caught in a hotel room with four other people who are not INEC officials with six DDC machines.
“Obviously, they have been arrested; investigation is going on in trying to determine whether he was acting alone or whether he had partners who are his collaborators within INEC or outside.

“In fact, he left people in the office who were still working over night producing the voter register to say he was going home around 8pm and left and evidently he left and went to the hotel to perpetrate whatever crime he was caught perpetrating.

This is a pointer to all of us that we must be vigilant during the election period in April. PDP will do anything to rig the coming election and we must strive to protect our vote. Vote BB 2011 for the restoration of our dear country Nigeria. Nigeria shall flourish again
Re: Police Detain Pdp, Inec Staff Caught Tampering With Inec Materials by efisher(m): 6:44am On Mar 22, 2011
Rubbish INEC! Where is the control for all these machines? If they cannot control something as fundamental as the registration machines, how can they control the ballot boxes and the votes? Foolishness has so much blocked their thinking because everyone is busy accusing corruption and nobody is smart enough to bring in an idea that provides a lasting solution to the problem. Nigeria why? What are we using our brains for? Banks have vaults, security cameras, etc as controls against stealing. They know the problem is there but they have thought of ways to control it and it is working. Until we start thinking in this line, Nigeria will not move forward. We can come up with many ways to control electoral fraud just by thinking! INEC needs to reconsider some of its processes.  angry

how on earth can a normal nigerian write what u wrote above. we lost a ship in nigeria without trace till date. our attorney general of the federation was killed without trace till date and here u are talking abt tv and news.
in the process of registerations, how many machines were found in pdp ppl's houses and how many were on national news and what happened afterwards?
oct 1, bomb blast was pinned to a man called chief Raymond Dokpesi who was then supporting babangida's presidency but are u aware that the same bomb blast man is now in the Jega 2 presidential campeign team and he is nolonger responsible for the action?

there is a proverb saying that 'show your friend and i will tell who you are', that is the case of pdp in oyo state.at least ,oyo cp has confirmed that the suspects are members of pdp and governor akala is a member of pdp and one of mr good luck jonathan allies.there is no doubt that jonathan is a rigger just like akala and their believe that they can only win through rigging has not changed.i pray to God almighty to destroy all the evil people that are planning to rig the next month election.we shall wait and see if the president will not attempt to sweep this one under the carpet becos the integrity of his party is at stake

@alphonso k,
sometimes when nigerians write, i find it very difficult to believe they are nigerians for real.
pdp has criminals like the late adedibu, obj - mr. do or die, annenih - N300b contractor turned thief. bode george and alams - ex-convicts, mrs etteh - female criminal, iyabo obasanjo - like father like daughter and with these samples ass members of pdp, where did u get the word intergrity. jonathan as our president, came to aso rock via the most shameful manner in the name of election in 2007 which his late boss confessed to. so in all these, where is intergrity?
it is easier to see a christian in saudi arabia than to see a genuine politician in pdp.how can anti developments and progress have intergrity?
a govt that pays senators N15.9m and deny an average nigerian worker N18,000 is devilish and wicked and lacks everything intergrity.
a man who swore to protect nigerians and their properties but seats and watch us die carelessly on daily basis has no intergrity. the govt of a country where deaths are highly than in war zones has no intergrity.
the last time i checked, there was no honour among criminals but celebration of criminals is the order of the day.
shame of a nation.
