The word Physiotherapy was derived from the Greek term phusis-therapeia, meaning physical-healing. The practice dates back to ancient Greek in 460 BC. Its pioneer, a physician named Hippocrates asserted that a series of assisted physical exercises and manual therapy techniques can be used for a variety of health related purposes, such as pain relief, rehabilitation, and general body wellness. All the methods of therapy used by a physiotherapist dates back thousands of years.

Physiotherapists help improve a patient's physical functions through physical assessments, rehabilitation, and personalized exercise regimens.

Some Common Conditions that require a Physiotherapist
.

Musculoskeletal conditions: Conditions such arthritis, osteoporosis, back pain, sciatica, and gout require the assistance of a physiotherapist to manage.

Muscular dystrophy: These are a group of diseases that affects the muscles by causing progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.

Post-operative rehabilitation: After surgery, particularly those related to muscle damage, it is advised that you visit a physiotherapist to help aid the full recovery of functional mobility and help relieve muscle stiffness.

Getting Started

Get comfortable: Visiting a physiotherapist entails physical contact with the affected joints. As a patient with injury, or recovering from surgical procedure, you are advised to wear comfortable clothes that won't restrict movements or irritate scarred areas.

Clothing such as cotton shorts, shirts and leggings are highly recommended, when coming for consultation and therapy. This allows for easy assessment and treatment.

Patient Documentation: It is very important for your physiotherapist to know your medical history and general health to ascertain the best and safest treatment to be administered.

What to expect

Physical Assessments
: The physiotherapist aims to understand your condition better through physical assessment. To assess your mobile capacity, you will be asked to do a few motion exercises, such as a short distance walk. A physiotherapist will carry tests to check your level of pain, function, limitations, and reflexes. A proper assessment will enable the physiotherapist get a good idea of how to proceed with treatment.

Personalized Treatment

After a physical assessment, the physiotherapist will recommend a recovery plan that best suits your condition. A patient recovery is dependent on the individual. A personalized plan is necessary to follow through with the proper exercise regimen.

Our Approach

At St Joseph's Physiotherapy Clinic we are a team of therapists who use various techniques to achieve optimal results for our patients. Our range of treatments provided in the clinic and home services include (but are not limited to the following):

Electrotherapy: This involves the use of electric stimulation for treatment. This technique assists with pain reduction, promotes healing, and increases circulation for tissue repair.

Massage Treatment: As simple as massages may seem, you need a physiotherapist to perform it to receive maximum benefit. Massages involve manual manipulation of the body's soft tissues, with focus on muscle, tendon and ligaments. Physical hands-on therapy helps to relieve pain resulting from sporting activities, and fluid retention which occurs in an injury, or after surgical operation.

Therapeutic Ultrasound
: This helps to soften tissue, decrease pain, reduce swelling, break down dense scar tissues, and increase blood flow. This deep heating process is done by sending high frequency sound waves to the affected tissue.

Heat therapy: It is commonly adopted to relieve pain. It involves using warm materials such as heated towels, heating pads or heated wraps. It helps prevent muscle spasms.

Exercises: Stretches and Strengthening exercises are very necessary to regain full functionality and strength. Muscles shorten and become stiff after an injury or surgery, exercising helps to release stiffness and muscle tension.
