VERNONIA: The Story Of A Medical Student Sent Home By ASUU Strike

At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic, police brutality, recession, kidnapping and other vices are being highlighted daily in the media with a large percentage of the country’s young population sitting at home due to the ASUU strike, Angelica Chinecherem Uwaezuoke, the UNN Coordinator of the Society of Young Nigeria Writers, unveils her new novel.

VERNONIA tells the story of single parenthood in a gender-biased society, where mental illness is seen as a punishment from the ancestors and corruption runs wild. In her words, “writing this story as a young woman, who has lived all her life in Nigeria and witnessed these first-hand, reawakened some deep-lying emotions I had tucked in the shelves.”
