You may be right to some extent. Three years demotion means go back to where you were three years ago.
If the Major General rank came earlier than 3 years ago then the rank remains otherwise he will drop the rank.

Please let us cite situations correctly, Major General Adeniyi did not complain at any point in the video about lack.of equipment and the court martial makes no mention of such a claim.

The reason for the court martial was simple, his aide posted the video to social media, the video was a sit-rep which unflattered the military and was never created for view on the social media.

The manner in which the videos was discussed by many on social media didn't go down well with the military headship and his discipline was for his failure in judgement as regards his aide he should have acted fast himself to discipline the aide thoroughly he would have saved himself this embarrassment.

Remember this is not unique to Nigeria, the US naval officer in charge of a covid 19 stricken warship lost his posting for making his letter to military heads in pentagon and defence ministry public. Military communications and signals are not all meant for public consumption especially if they have not been vetted.
