One day, you will die and no one will find you. The words of Ademidun, his wife, rang in Martin’s mind as he watched his life drain off through his breath, even as he laid in the pool of his own blood.
His daughter, Sheila, stared at him with dead eyes and held a knife dripping with murky blood.
Everything flashed in Martin’s mind. Sheila’s almond-shaped eyes that slant up. The beautiful bulging tongue. The innocent smell. Her mother’s slippers near the swimming pool. Everything fought for his attention.
‘Call your uncle’, he muttered.
‘Okay, Daddy…’ Sheila said and ran off.
Martin’s tried to call his barking Pitbull to order but this hoarse voice didn’t do justice.
‘Princess’! Idowu yelled from within the house.
Idowu’s voice fizzled out and was replaced by pattering slippers. The moment Idowu rushed out with Sheila as he was pocketing his earpieces, Martins slipped into unconsciousness.
But not before he saw the splashes of the bloody swimming pool, where his dying wife was fighting for her life. At the same time, Bruno struggled to sink his teeth in Ademidun’s glowing skin for the sixth time.
When Martins woke later, he found himself surrounded by the accusing eyes of friends, family, and police. The soap-like stench of the hospital and the frequent grunt Ademidun on the other side of the room made him realise that he was still alive. The only joyful thing in the room was his daughter resting in the arms of her grandmother.
‘Good! You’re all here!’ Martins grunted as he sat up. Idowu rushed to him. ‘Has anyone checked the CCTV footage yet?’
Idowu shook his head just as the others looked about with guilt. Their angry faces melted into wonder.
Two hours later, everyone saw what happened.
Ademidun struck Martins from behind while he was recording a video. His iPhone crashed out of his hand just as she struck him again. Before she could strike the third time, Bruno crashed into her, into the swimming pool, making the knife fly out of her hand.
‘Why?’ The policeman asked.
‘Sheila isn’t my daughter. I was about casting her on IG to her millions of followers…’
Ademidun looked away, at the empty wall, silent and wheezing.
