Father Ejike Mbaka, one of the most popular Catholic priests in Nigeria, and some members of his church, are said to have assaulted a BBC team. According to BBC News, the Catholic priest assaulted the BBC crew and two others at his complex in Emene town in south-eastern Enugu State on Wednesday evening. BBC journalists Chioma Obianinwa and Nnamdi Agbanelo, as well as their driver, Ndubuisi Nwafor, were accompanied by another Catholic priest, Father Cajethan Obiekezie and his assistant, Solomon Orakam, to Father Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry at around 10:00 local time on Wednesday. Father Obiekezie had facilitated an interview with Father Mbaka, but it could not be immediately held because he was preaching. The BBC crew, led by Father Obiekezie, moved to Father Mbaka’s home after the church service to conduct the interview at around 17:00. When Father Mbaka got home, the journalists, who were waiting in the car after Father Obiekezie went to talk to him, were suddenly surrounded by about 20 men. According to Obianinwa, the men seized their equipment and threatened to kill them for writing "negative reports about Mbaka". “Mbaka asked us to wait until the end of the programme for the interview. The men outside his house said BBC Igbo writes negative things about Mbaka and started beating Nnamdi, Solomon and Ndubuisi. They gave them heavy blows on their heads and all over their body,” Obianinwa said. The BBC reporter further said that Father Mbaka and Father Obiekezie came out of the house when they heard the noise and that Father Mbaka faced her and started poking his fingers in her face, calling her "satanic".’ “This fired up the men to continue the attacks as Father Mbaka continued shouting and abusing us. He asked his men to seize our phones and cameras. They said they would kill us and nothing would happen. They removed my wig and tried to strangle Nnamdi. Father Obiekezie was telling them to stop but they attacked him too and seized his phone,” she said. Obianinwa said the attacks stopped when she screamed that “the world would know that they were killed in Mbaka’s house”. “At this point, Father Mbaka asked us to leave before his men killed us. He asked them to return our equipment and they chased us out of the compound. His men trailed us till we left the state to seek medical assurance and police help,” she said. When the BBC called the number on Father Mbaka’s official Facebook page for his reaction, it was switched off. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-africa-47639452 mynd44 |

It is a very disturbing allegation and one that should be looked into properly by the police. If truly they were beaten and seeked medical and police aid immediately then the should be some well preserved evidence. The presence of another priest whose phone was seized in the process can't be underestimated. As a public spiritual figure father Mbaka should expect criticsm. How he responds to such criticsms defines his person. As a servant of Christ he should know better. Why let your boys beat up non violent visitors. What I find disturbing is the assertion by his boys that the crew could be killed and nothing will happen. All this fake prophets who can't emulate Christ. Hate or love TB Joshua his humility you wil find not in other Nigerian god of men. All this never mind their business journalist sef. Still he could have turned down their interview or seize the opportunity to paint a picture. He did paint a picture after all |

Fr mbaka version of the story. In Mbaka’s official position on the matter, the Adoration spokesman, Mr Maximus Ugwuoke, both Fr. Mbaka and the entire Adoration family were not aware of the presence of the BBC team on the Adoration ground to interview the Spiritual leader. Ugwuoke narrated that what took place was that the BBC team swooped on Fr Mbaka in espionage with a detracting priest from Anambra state and were confronted by the AMEN security operatives. Ugwuoke insisted that the BBC was never invited to interview the Adoration spiritual leader. According to Ugwuoke: “We make haste to state that the report was a carefully crafted mendacious narrative calculated to tarnish the image of Fr Mbaka who in his amiable nature could not have done or directed any of those alleged acts of assault on the BBC team or anyone as alleged against him. “An eye witness account of what happened reveals that one Fr Obiekeze (Cajetan) who estranged himself from the ministry and made a viral video with BBC recently abusing Fr Mbaka and his perceived romance with President Mohammadu Buhari, came to join Fr Mbaka at the altar during his last Wednesday’s weekly ministry programme. “The said Fr Obiekezie persistently insisted that Fr Mbaka should grant him an interview at his altar. Fr Mbaka in his loving, forgiving and welcoming nature embraced the said priest but however declined the priest’s demand to interview him at the altar wondering when the said priest became a media practitioner and the organization he was working for. “Unknown to anyone in the ministry, the said priest came with some persons with an unknown identity who were secretly recording the day’s ministry programme until they were accosted by the ministry security suspecting them to be assassins on a surveillant mission. The said ministry security seized the equipment of the strange fellows and sought to know their identities. “Later in the evening after Fr Mbaka was through with the programme and retired to the parish house to continue his consultation with worshippers waiting to see him, altercations between the fellows and the security men at Fr Mbaka’s parish house drew Fr Mbaka’s attention to them and his timely intervention helped to save the situation. “Fr Mbaka was surprised when the unknown fellows identified themselves as coming from BBC with Fr Obiekezie. Surprised by such obvious betrayal and stage-managed visit from a fellow priest, Fr Mbaka directed that every of their seized equipment be returned to them and made sure no one hurt either the priest or the unknown visitors he surreptitiously came with. “Fr Mbaka nor the ministry never invited the said BBC team to the ministry neither was Fr Mbaka nor the ministry notified of their presence by anyone as alleged.” The other priest is mischievous. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/12/why-adoration-security-attacked-bbc-reporters-%e2%80%95-fr-mbaka/amp/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&__twitter_impression=true |
