The Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (retd.), on Thursday, says the Nigerian Army is one of the best in Africa and can defeat any enemy when given the right arsenals and assistance.

Magashi said the troops are capable of winning the Boko Haram war in North-East Nigeria given their exploits in many foreign missions in West Africa and other parts of the continent.

He said, “In Africa, Nigerian Army should be adjudged one of the best, we have conducted so many operations outside Nigeria. We went to ECOMOG (Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group), we did the very best we can. We went to Sierra Leone, we did the very best we can and some other places. We are a force that is reckon with in Africa but because of the nature of the prolongation of this war, people are getting tired.

“They (Boko Haram terrorists) are not concentrated in one particular place, it is an operation that they hit and run, we don’t even know their bases. Now, we know that the best way to fight these people is to get enough intelligence and go out there to fight them and this is what we are doing. Every day, we are getting information and the Nigerian Army and Air Force are running them down.”

The minister noted that Boko Haram terrorists have been dislodged from Borno State but they occasionally launch fatal attacks to attract the attention of the international community and embarrass the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

Magashi spoke while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme monitored by The PUNCH.

He said, “They don’t hold any ground in Borno State. The only thing with this kind of insurgent operation is that they want to surprise you, embarrass you and do whatever they think will attract international news or commotion. That is what they have been doing and that is why we are trying very hard to adopt tactics and other forms of operations in order to stop these people embarrassing this nation.”

Magashi expressed optimism that though Nigeria has not been receiving the needed support from some nations, the country is determined to get rid of the Boko Haram sect.

“At the moment, most people think because of these sporadic attacks here and there, we lost control or we are not doing our best. Most people know the problem of this country; the Armed Forces are overstretched, we are not supported by some of these countries we call our friends, they are not ready to give us what we need. But certainly, Nigeria is better of than what it was years ago,” he stated.

Unnecessary Chest Beating.

The Nigerian Military used to be one of the best in the country but unfortunately they have fallen short of their glory days.
The NA has been known around for their prowess in peacekeeping, and maintaining stability in various countries but have failed to keep peace in theirs because they are not trained for internal warfare/aggression.

Now let's look at things on a wider scale to show the NA is no longer the force it used to be.
Case One:
Mali's capital was almost being invaded by terrorist groups, one would expect that since they can't handle it they should seek for help from the nearest Military with the strength to handle it (that NA should naturally be the go Army for such, since they are the imaginary strongest in West Africa) but what the did the Malians do? They called France for help undermining the NA's ability.
Case Two:
Turkey is seeking to kick France out of West Africa, and Africa as a whole. They need a military in West Africa to partner with in terms of training and logistic (military base in West Africa), they should have approached the NA (again being the imaginary strongest Army in West Africa) but no they are starting a partnership with the Senegalese Army (one of the strongest on the continent). Although Turkey, already has a training agreement with the NA (this isn't partnership though).
Case Three:
Nigeria's corruption disease has eaten deep into the military, the only part of the military that is trying at all cost to remain relevant in the Air Force. The Navy can't boast of destroyers just covertte upon all the money spent yearly, the NA lacks defense systems and the Air Force is only managing to close up a few deals for some fighter planes, and attack helicopters. Nigeria should have become a produce of these things just like South Africa.
Case Four:
If the NA was as powerful as it claims countries like France won't be setting up bases in West Africa and neighboring Sahel countries.

That's why I laughed during the Xenophobia attacks on Nigerians in SA and people were calling for a military action against SA. Almost every West African nation combined can't defeat SA or Egypt due to their current arsenal.
In West Africa, Senegal and Ghana will defeat the NA if there is ever a show of aggression against any of them reason being that both have been growing their arsenal for sometime now.
THE NA HAS LOST ITS GLORY AND MUST SEEK TO RESTORE IT.
