Hello guys,

This thread is for Software developers, data analysts, data scientists, BI analysts, and programmers who are interested in securing remote jobs internationally.

In the next couple of days, I am going to be posting some remote jobs available in different parts of the world.

Did you know that as a Nigerian, you can get a remote job that pays as high as $5000 per month. This will be dependent on your skill level, experience and expertise.

Many companies in the US are hiring remote workers now and you too can get that opportunity you have always wanted in the Tech space.

I would need a couple of comments or like as an affirmation that you guys are ready. Then we will set the ball rolling.

Senior Software Engineer

AT AUTOMATTIC (ENGINEERING)

Remote

WordPress doesn’t try to keep its users inside walled gardens, a rare thing in a world that is dangerously moving away from the open web. Instead, WordPress gives them the freedom to build a business website, an online store, or a personal blog – the way they like it. Big sites or small, using the community-run open source project or Automattic’s , vanilla or customised with hundreds of plugins, WordPress users always get to own and control their data, their expression, and their freedom.

What have we worked on recently?

Gutenberg is a new block-level editor with clean abstractions for users, too, not just developers.
Jetpack is a plugin that brings cloud-scale features to self-hosted sites and our latest addition is Rewind, think git for WordPress sites.
WooCommerce is the most popular e-commerce platform on the web.
To view more of our recent work, check out our longer product list on Automattic.com.
How do we work?

We’re kind to each other and our users – we strive to build a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture of cohesive teams focused on delivering value to our customers.
We work as a global and distributed workforce resulting in a unique way of working built around our creed.
We offer flexible work arrangements allowing our team members to work when they feel best.
We open-source! We’re cool with open-sourcing everything except passwords, or secret keys.
We ship often, deploying many times daily with the help of peer code review, continuous integration, and our global workforce in over 70 countries.
We welcome collaboration, and you can be involved in any discussion across our many communication channels.
Enough about us, let‘s talk more about you. The Software Engineer position might be a good fit if you:

Have production experience with several programming languages. We mostly use PHP and JavaScript at Automattic – you should either be familiar with them already or the idea of using them on a daily basis should not be a blocker for you.
Have experience working on a large-scale system. Making it faster, more scalable, and fault-tolerant.
Know about systems architecture.
Are highly collaborative and you love participating in code reviews and discussions about architecture, or design.
Are passionate about and experienced in software development; in particular, advanced PHP knowledge is a plus.
Are knowledgeable about design patterns and testability; having experience with testing frameworks, performance testing and unit testing is very welcome.
Are thoughtful about product design, with good user experience instincts.
Are open and able to travel 3-4 weeks per year to meet up with your teammates in person.
Extra credit:

WordPress programming experience.
Open source contributions or contributions to programs designed to help underrepresented people enter the tech field.
Experience working on accessibility.
Familiarity with JavaScript.
Data analysis experience, and understanding of how analytics can help with product decisions.
Knowledge of tooling and build systems.
Speaking of interests and skills, here are some areas in which you can grow and have further impact in the future at the company:

Leadership – we offer a variety of leadership options to those who have interest, including becoming a team lead and managing releases.
Learning and development – we have a generous personal development budget and encourage you to grow your skills through courses, books and conferences.
Architecture – we encourage developers to develop expertise in the systems they work with, guide their evolution and mentor other developers working on them.
Engineering effectiveness – we believe in helping other developers become more effective through tools, practices, cross-team collaborations, and process improvements.
These are exciting times at Automattic and you’ll have a unique opportunity to shape the future of our products. Join us! We look forward to hearing from you.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Automattic

We’re improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tech industry. At Automattic, we want people to love their work and show respect and empathy to all. We welcome differences and strive to increase participation from traditionally underrepresented groups. Our DEI committee involves Automatticians across the company and drives grassroots change. For example, this group has helped facilitate private online spaces for affiliated Automatticians to gather and helps run a monthly DEI People Lab series for further learning. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a priority at Automattic, though our dedication influences far more than just Automatticians: We make our products freely available and translate our products into and offer customer support in numerous languages. We require unconscious bias training for our hiring teams and ensure our products are accessible across different bandwidths and devices. Read more about our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Curious who works in engineering at Automattic? Meet our Code Wranglers – Brandon, Jeremy, Mark, Jennifer, Roy and Kat!

What to Expect

We know applying to jobs can be stressful and we want to ease the stress by giving clear expectations upfront about our process. We’ve outlined everything you need to know here including all of the steps in the process as well as how we approach hiring. We’re always iterating so if you happen to join us in the process, please feel free to offer feedback on what else we can include there!

How many people in Nigeria have remote jobs from US, UK, Canada, Germany, UAE ect and how did they get it?

The Plain Truth is that connection is involved in some of these remote Jobs as the news below shows:

Facebook Sued By Justice Dept. For Allegedly Discriminating Against U.S. Workers
By Dustin Jones

Thursday, December 3, 2020 • 6:01 PM EST

The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against social media monolith Facebook Thursday, alleging the company "refused to recruit, consider, or hire qualified and available U.S. workers for over 2,600 positions."

According to the lawsuit, Facebook allegedly reserved the positions for temporary visa holders it wanted to sponsor for permanent residency in the U.S. The average salary of these positions: $156,000.

The lawsuit came after a nearly two-year investigation, according to the Justice Dept.

"Our message to workers is clear: if companies deny employment opportunities by illegally preferring temporary visa holders, the Department of Justice will hold them accountable," Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Civil Rights Division said in a statement. "Our message to all employers—including those in the technology sector—is clear: you cannot illegally prefer to recruit, consider, or hire temporary visa holders over U.S. workers."

A Facebook spokesperson provided NPR with a brief statement: "Facebook has been cooperating with the [Department of Justice] in its review of this issue and while we dispute the allegations in the complaint, we cannot comment further on pending litigation."

The Permanent Labor Certification Process (PERM) requires employers to prove to the Labor Dept. that they were unsuccessful in recruiting a qualified U.S. worker for a position before moving to sponsor a temporary visa holder for the job.

According to the Justice Dept. statement, Facebook allegedly reserved positions for temporary visa holders it wanted to sponsor for permanent residency - a green card. The suit additionally alleges that Facebook attempted to channel these positions away from U.S. workers by failing to advertise the openings on the company's careers website, and requiring applicants to apply exclusively by physical mail.

"The department concluded that, during the relevant period, Facebook received zero or one U.S. worker applicants for 99.7% of its PERM positions, while comparable positions at Facebook that were advertised on its careers website during a similar time period typically attracted 100 or more applicants each," the statement said.

According to the Justice Dept., Facebook allegedly violated the Immigration and Nationality Act by discriminating against U.S. workers. The lawsuit is part of the Civil Rights Division's Protecting U.S. Workers Initiative, established by the Trump administration in 2017.

It's not easy to get remote jobs as a generalist developer. You are competing with others in your country, developers in India, bootcamp graduates in the USA and then people from eastern Europe. Best to find a niche with few people.

Thank you so much for this!
This is one thing that I want to grow on, in the coming years (get a good remote foreign job to add to what I do locally)

What I currently do is freelance(fiverr)Data Entry, Business plan writing etc and do Bookkeeping, Inventory Management etc locally.

My field is in Accounting/Finance. It might not be core tech but every industry has the tech side of it.

For getting a decent foreign remote job, I think the highest paying jobs in my field are Account Executive, Financial Analyst, Project Management etc.
From my observation getting these jobs requires high level education (Msc, MBA) aside the soft and hard skills.
It's a challenge funding these programs at the moment.

If there's anyone in same industry that has a remote job, please kindly me with tips on steps to quickly move up the ladder in this field.
Thanks.

One of our biggest problems in this country is the way we see ourselves. We don't rate ourselves. Are you aware that some of you are even more skilled than some of the so-called professionals abroad. The technical recruiter over there is more concerned about your skillset and your ability to solve problems than the country you come from.

I have seen people apply for a job in the US and the UAE from here, they got interviewed, passed the interview and the company sponsors their visa and relocation expenses.

A machine learning engineer just left for Dubai 2 months ago from Nigeria, all expenses paid by the company - Visa, tickets and accomodation. The guy is very experienced and knows his onions. Salary is about 30, 000 AED, that's almost 3million naira and its TAX free with other benefits.

Whats am I trying to say guys, we all need to change our mentality and how we see and value ourselves first. No matter how good and qualified you are, if you always think there is a white guy somewhere who will get a chance ahead of you then you have a big problem that you have to deal with. Always believe in yourself and in your abilities.

Thats why I love the indians and the Pakistanis, despite the discrimination they have suffered in the past, they have a competitive mentality and go for what they want. Thats why they are doing well in the tech space.

Because you need a degree to get a work visa. At least for most countries. In Japan you either have a degree or ten years work experience. In others it's impossible to bring in someone who doesn't have a degree.

It depends on the country honestly. In places like Germany they seem to be very strict on working with what you studied. Some certifications can help circumvent the rule though.

I plan to enroll for it during my 6months IT next year, i heard they do have remote internship also, which i hope would be better considering the fact that i'll spend one more year in the university after that.

I plan to enroll for it during my 6months IT next year, i heard they do have remote internship also, which i hope would be better considering the fact that i'll spend one more year in the university after that.

They've changed the program structure, undergraduates can enroll. I attended their webiner last month, an every class can be virtual now, but 95% participation in projects gets you qualified for the placements

The 580k is for those paying in installment. Am paying once at 540k, as only graduates can pay the 15% income agreement for two years at 86k..whats the starting pay range for junior dev after that training ? I hope to get AWS cert before i Graduate.

Well...if you have 540K you can go for it...but since you wanna do it for 6 months , why not look for a way you can get a well structured learning too that wouldn't cost much...the full stack training is good but in the real sense nobody can be full stack oo...well if you are in Lagos we can meet I would love to help out by giving you resources you would need to kick start you in the 6 months of your IT...in exchange you will provide me with data to download maybe a Video of 15Gb....

As of the salary for Junior Dev it depends on the company..some pay70k some 80K some 100K some 120k but few sha...I would suggest you start with front end first...in short if you are in Lagos let's meet lemme help you with enough and well structured ressources worth the same amount you would pay them...free off charge ...but na you go pay my TP...
