Corona Pandemic : Health Crisis Or Economic Crisis? by Dpsychologist: 12:39pm On Dec 16, 2020
We have two crisis facing us.

The first is covid-19.

The second is a declining global economy.

Health Crisis
Covid-19 keeps sweeping through the global population. Despite months of research and testing, and our effort to curb this menace, there seems to be resurgence.
As of 15th of December 2020, 758 new confirmed cases and 3 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

Till date, 74,132 cases have been confirmed, 66,494 cases have been discharged and 1,200 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

It is reported that more people who have recovered from COVID-19-related deaths are coming down with it.
The population remains woefully under-tested and hospitals under-equipped.

So, while there may be far more people being infected than we’re counting, there’s also likely far more people dying than we’re counting.

If there’s one thing we know for certain about this pandemic, it’s that we know almost nothing for certain about this pandemic.

We still don’t fully know what COVID-19 does to the body or its long-term repercussions.

Economic Crisis
With the inception of the pandemic, in a span of months, the travel, hospitality, entertainment, restaurant, retail industries and even schools were put to a halt.
Due to the lockdown, housands have lost their jobs and unemployment rate soars. Alot of people entered into depression.
The consensus is that me enter into a recession.
Sadly, there have already been a number of reported cases of people contracting COVID-19 twice .

Doctors have noted that we may be in the middle of a second wave of the pandemic.

President of ARD LUTH, Dr.Judith Jolayemi said:

“Schools after vacating this month maybe considered to remain closed until the epidemic curve begins to reverse. Government at all levels should continue to enforce laws regarding adherence to safety protocols, scale-up covid-19 testing, improve infrastructure and services across boarding including the airports and ensure the delivery of Covid-19 vaccines at the earliest time possible.”
Apart from following Covid-19 protocols which costs alot of money we may have to undergo another phase of lockdown.

The conundrum
In the midst of the pandemic, if you do the prudent thing for the population’s health, you introduce a new systemic risk: economic crisis.
But if you avoid an economic crisis by encouraging people to go about their lives as normal, you exacerbate the risk of a public health crisis.
The conundrum is that we either sacrifice health for economy or sacrifice ecinomy for health.
My hope is that in the long run, we will come out of this pandemic.
