CITATION THE MOVIE: CALLING SEX FOR GRADES TO HALT IN OUR HIGHER INSTITUTIONS

Salutations to leering lecturers - assailants in suits with pen in hand as weapons, whose joy lies between the thighs of female students. Tunde Babalola is here with a prolific work - Citation - aimed at addressing your flaws, exposing your wrongs, and giving your victims a laudable voice.

Produced by the ace filmmaker - Kunle Afolayan - and communicated in four languages; English French Yoruba and Wolof, Citation the movie addressed the Sex for grades scandal, which is gradually turning into a norm in our higher institutions, with no hope of when it would be called to halt. Joke Silva, Temi Otedola, Sadiq Daba, Gabriel Afolayan, Bukunmi Oluwashina, Ini Edo, Jimmy Jean-Louis are few among acting maestros that spiced up the trending movie.

Like many other victims of sex for grades, Moremi, a 20-year-old Masters Student and the main character in the movie, became a victim of sex for grade and was seriously assaulted by his lecturer and supervisor, Professor Lucien Ndyare, who like his cohorts were supposed to treat the pestilence of sexual abuse but rather became the behemoth of the unworthy criminality.

The Senegalese born Professor, despite being married with a wife and two kids, did all he could and put in his best leg just to have his way to two thighs of Moremi, but things went topsy-turvy and just when it was clear Moremi won't consent to his terms, the luciferous lecturer decided to score her off mark and have her repeat with a year. However, unlike many other victims of sexual abuse, Moremi decided to speak up and hence narrated her ordeal to the world. This triggered talks, opinions and backlashes, which made the school Senate open a panel hearing into the matter. And has fortune would beam a smile on Moremi, she had the support of hundreds of thousands sympathizers, and even one Ajike Advocacy Centre which stood for her as her legal team. After the whole hearing process, Moremi was exonerated and the porous Professor was not only relieved of his duty but also made to face the state prosecution.

The living heroine - Moremi - gave a voice and renewed the hope of other victims of sexual abuse, that they shouldn't succumb to threats from their predators and hence speak up. Shortly after they left the panel hearing, she was interviewed by top broadcasting companies; Channels, AIT and a host of others about how she felt with the whole drama. Read what what the rare jewel has to say in duration 2:24:05 of the movie "I'm just a girl trying to go to school in order to attain a dream. It was never my intention to become the poster face for sexual harassment in campuses. But it is a hat I'm proud and willing to wear. I hope my victory serves as a clarion call for change and k hope my victory gives a voice to the silent girls or women in all walks of life facing sexual harassment due to their gender."

What an edutaining movie which has gained mouth-watering accolades from across the world and even topping Netflix worldwide chart, since a week after its release till this moment. It might not have achieved such a laudable feat, but its salient message - Sex for Grade - pierced through the epicenter on many souls. We shouldn't forget so soon, the case of Dr Sani Idiagbon, the head of English department at University of Ilorin who on June 6, 2016 was caught on tape assaulting a female student identified as Faith who had gone to the lecturer to complain of a missing test, but was rather told to lay her back so she could have the marks.

In the spring of 2018, another Lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Richard Akindele was as well caught on tape assaulting a female Masters student, Monica Osagie. Albeit, he was later sentenced to two years imprisonment by Justice Maureen Onyetenu who said the professor should be used as a scapegoat to deter other lecturers from committing similar act.

The October 7, 2019 investigative report by Kiki Mordi, Oge Obidiebube and their team at the BBC Eye, where a 13 minutes documentary exposed sexual harassment of students by some lecturers was also commendable. Dr Bonafice Igbenghu of University of Lagos, Dr Ransford Gyamoi and Dr Paul Kwame Butakor of University of Ghana were exposed in the said video. The then trending video pulled many other victims of sexual abuse out of their shells as they called out their predators, using their social media platforms.

Shortly after that, a former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and many other well-meaning Nigerians called on the Nigerian government to take harsh and immediate action against sexual harassment in Nigerian Universities. But till date, same remains the story. The malicious acts kept increasing as each day passes, and if care is not taken, would soon turn a norm in our higher institutions.
