If you want to remain professionally relevant in the next 30 to 40 years, there are a few factors you ought to pay attention to.

At Lingo Africa, we recently engaged a few foreign human capital experts to give us a worldview on what professionals should be doing differently in order to stay ahead in the workplace game.

Some of the insights they provided us include but are not limited to;

Prioritizing skills over degrees: As much as degrees are important, skills should be on top of your list if you want to build and satin a portfolio career. If you aim to earn higher in your chosen industry, look at the skills you do not have and engage in practical ways to learn them.

Real-world simulations: As you learn, engage in real life analysis that is developed, applied and verified. This way, you can become skilled at solving real problems and as you are already aware, the demand for problem solving skills are rising on a daily basis.

Take part in on-the-job trainings – If the opportunity arises for official trainings in your workplace, do not exempt yourself from it. Always engage, develop and update your skills.

Be more flexible – Always be open to exploring in your professional life. If you are too rigid, you may find yourself phasing out and losing opportunities to those who are more daring. Think about Research in Motion (makers of the Blackberry phones) and how they lost considerable market share to Apple due to the former’s business rigidity.
