ASUU – Academic Staff Union of Universities has suspended the 10-month-old strike conditionally with effect from 12am Thursday 24 December 2020.



The ASUU leader, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi announced the conditional suspension of the strike about 9AM this morning in Abuja.

According to him, ASUU Union has accepted the offer of Federal Government and they are expected to monitor the implementation as part of their agreement to end their 10-month-old strike action.



The ASUU President said the Union and National Executive Council NEC have agreed to end the strike conditionally by saying that if the Federal Government refuse to fulfil their own part of the agreement, ASUU may resume strike action without any prior notice.

When Will Nigerian Universities Resume?

Actually, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) didn’t give the exact date or time that Universities students will resume back to school due to the COVID-19 new guidelines that are still active.

However, the Union explained that the Senate of each school will determine when school will resume for academic activities.

The Union noted that Government responsibility is to ensure that they put in place all the required measures for al the public Universities and they are also expected to inform senate of the various schools when they will resume.

Recall that during the first wave of COVID-19 outbreak, Federal Government shut down all schools including universities.


ASUU, FG finally agree on Major Issues after ten months strike

ASUU and the Federal Government finally reached a good agreement on major issues that led to the end of the ten-month strike by lecturers.

This agreement was reached on Wednesday morning when they came back from the over 8-hour close door meeting after several months of negotiations between both parties.

The meeting in Abuja was led by The Federal Government delation team, Chris Ngige who is the Minister of Labour and Employment.

According to what ASUU posted on their social handles, they said they are very happy about how the Federal Government handled the matter because they have been given a new offer which gave them relief about the issue.

Although ASUU President said the Union will get back to the government on their own stand within 24 hours.

However, a few hours after, The ASUU Union announces the suspension of the 10-month strike action via their social media handles.

The Union had shutdown public Universities since March 2020 in a bid to press home their demand that Government signed in 2009 agreement.
