I want to pick a car as a family car, with not too big a budget (700 k).

Please help me make a good selection.

I need something that is strong, durable, reliable, cheap/easy to maintain, with best comfort & enjoyment at that level.

I'm considering the following.
1.Toyota corolla 2003/04 Bank edition
2. Honda civic 2007/08
3. Volkswagen jetta 2006-2008

The Civic comes top among your list. Don’t go near a Naija used VW. In order to get you a good unit of the Civic, you’ll need to up your budget, cars are generally expensive now.

Of all these cars, CIVIC beat Others and has combined MPG of 5.4L/100km (or something) on 1.8L.

Try the hyrbid versions (1.4iMA or 1.8LP hybrids) and N1000 fuel will go to Lokoja from Abuja.

The model of Civic na em I de also make enquiries about now. The fuel consumption beat Corolla hands down.

Corolla - 9L/100km (city)
2005- Civic - 5.4L/100km (city)

700-900k can get you Naija used Civic and not toks.

Please, if you have owned this model of Civic (US or Japanese model), tell us about it.

A colleague told me that US model is better, HOW TRUE

What of mechanic for Hybrid car?
Can a conventional mechanic do the job; as in work on it when there is engine problem? Or wl I require a specialist for repairs?

Buy the 1.8L.

The Hybrid version gets best mpg @ 4.3l/100km.

If you are in Abuja, there is a hybrid mechanic @Gudu (his name is Chidi).

The truth is the the money you saved for fuel will still be used to buy hybrid battery every 5yrs @300k-350k.

Buy the straight 4 cylinder (1.8L engine).

My only advice is remove the VW Jetta from your mind and list. That car is a serious liability

As he had said, buy the 1.8 litre engine civic. Hybrids are slow af and pretty much no mechanics can get their heads around its issues. A used civic hybrid is truly great in fuel economy, but for a used one, be ready to replace the battery pack or service the electric motor.

the pics shows the mpg of HYBRID version. the 1.8L gets about 5.4L/100km, which is by far better than Toyota Corolla.

always type the model of the car you want and add "autoevolution" and that website will give you technical specs of the vehicle.

I searched it under carcomplaints.com and got to find out its bad side too.

No car is perfect.

My colleague owns the hybrid version (battery bad at the moment and if it shows the battery sign, you have to turn the car off or the electric steering will lock).

The car is low too and not good if you live in a bad area. (Maybe slight lifting will solve this or increase tire size).

Also, its hubs may wear out quickly but DOES not pull leg.

No, Nigerian mechanics do not know how to fix volkswagen Jetta, or its either it always lands in the wrong hands of users who think they can srive it anyhow. I always say it time without number, car na like human being, its the way you maintain it, thats the way it would serve you.

There are cars that are naturally trouble makers and there are cars that will tolerate abuse.

Reliability of all cars is not the same even among the same brand.

There is nothing more than this to say if you don't understand.

lol. i understand you except a manufacturer calls back a brand for defect due to factory or manufacturing error, you are not in any position to say that a certain brand or model is a problem pit. the people wey dey drive am abroad wey no get problems with am na two heads them get? abi them make for africa come make for oyibo separate? i say it again, most vw mechanics in nigeria have no si gle clue of what they are doing. they all think they are working with Golf3 that has almost no advanced electrical systems. to me, that is where most kazeems knowledge of vw stops.
