The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed into law the budget size of N1,163,522,460,717, insidensija reports.

While N460.6bn was approved for recurrent expenditure, N702.9bn was for capital expenditure.

The 2021 budget, tagged, ‘Budget of Rekindled Hope’ is aimed at charting a definite course of change to meet with recent events of global and national proportions, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest.

A statement said the Co-Chairman of the Joint Committee on Economic Planning and Budget and Finance, Gbolahan Yishawu, while presenting a report of the committee, noted that his team got commitment from revenue generating agencies in the state.

According to him, the proposed revenue is achievable if necessary funds that will enable delivery on projected revenue estimates are available.

The lawmakers, after debating the presentation, adopted the recommendations as the resolution of the House.

The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, directed the Acting Clerk of the House, Mr Olalekan Onafeko, to send a clean copy to the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for assent.

Heavy but not enough for a mega city with almost 20 million inhabitants.

Nigeria is actually not rich enough to finance its needs even without any stealing.

Where is the evidence for the previous year? D only state in Nigeria with over 1trillion budget yet we're not anywhere near Dubai.

The corruption in Lagos State is alarming. The level of cover-up and media management of this endemic and progressive graft it's so mind boggling.

Actually, Lagos is being shortchanged by the federation. Over 90% of revenue generated in the state goes to the federation account with a paltry sum given back to the state monthly as allocation. If the state government is allowed to control half of the revenue generated in the state, it would be miles ahead of every country in West Africa.

When the federal capital was moved to Abuja, Lagos should have been conferred with a special status in line with international best practices and at least 1% of the federation account be allocated monthly to the state to deal with the population and infrastructure challenges that were inherited from the FG. Sadly, crass ethnic politics and jealousy played out and the state was denied its rightful benefit. Even when Senator Tinubu introduced the bill to give the state a special status in the eight assembly, our brothers from the east joined northern lawmakers to shut it down.
