School resumption or lockdown?

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC),
Viruses constantly change through mutation, and new variants of a virus are expected to occur over time. Sometimes new variants emerge and disappear. Other times, new variants emerge and persist. Multiple variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 have been documented in the United States and globally during this pandemic.

These new variant have also been discovered in Africa especially in South Africa and Nigeria. Do we need a lockdown to curtail this virus or schools to resume to catch up on the academic calendar that has been delayed for quite some time?
