Multiple access means that just one person can't launch an attack. The code is broken into multiple pieces. Everyone with a piece of the code must consent before an attack.

It's even harder that way.
This will be terrible from a strategic point of view. So what if there is dissent and the opponent's nukes are already in the air?

The president will be bickering with Congress?

STUPID SUGGESTION ON SO MANY LEVELS.

BlessedNuel:
Biden Urged To Renounce Sole Control Of US Nuclear Weapons

A former US defense secretary has called on President-elect Joe Biden to reform the system that gives sole control of the nation’s nuclear arsenal to the president, calling it “outdated, unnecessary and extremely dangerous.”

The call from William Perry came the same day US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke with the nation’s top military leader about ensuring that an “unhinged” President Donald Trump not be able to launch a nuclear attack in his final days in office.

“Once in office, Biden should announce he would share authority to use nuclear weapons with a select group in Congress,” said Perry, who served under President Bill Clinton.

The only way such a change could work is if it is legislated upon by Congress and made into law. A mare announcement by a president would not mean anything. The next President would make a counter announcement. Even if Biden made the announcement after taking office, he could change his mind layer when he wants to actually launch a nuclear bomb.

He was writing in Politico magazine with Tom Collina of the Ploughshares Fund, which advocates for stronger nuclear controls.

They said Biden, who takes office January 20, should also declare that the United States will never start a nuclear war and would use the bomb only in retaliation.
WhatsApp he smoking? Retaliation in a nuclear strike. You mean President Biden should wait until Russia launches 10 Satan 2 nuclear missiles on US before retaliating? There might not be anyone or anything infrastructure left to retaliate.

The piece argues that the current system gives the president — any president — “the godlike power to deliver global destruction in an instant,” an approach the authors call “undemocratic, outdated, unnecessary and extremely dangerous.”
That's the same godlike power being held by US adversaries like Russia, North Korea and China. So unless other nuclear countries put restrains on their leaders launching nuclear weapons, it does not make sense to restrain only the US.

Perry, who was defense minister from 1994 to 1997, calls Trump “unhinged” and adds, “Do we really think that Trump is responsible enough to trust him with the power to end the world?”
Then the US needs to be more responsibe when choosing their president. There is no restrain that can deter an unhinged president from destroying the country.

Very Bad advice. Multiple access means multiple targets by foreign enemies. The POTUS remains the most secured individual. A congressman is an easy target to the Russians, N-Koreans and the communist china spies.

Yes.

But you will have to assemble all targets to make any lunch. One access is one piece of the puzzle

Unnecessary statements and articles why would Trump launch a nuclear weapon now? I know Trump is stupid but surely nobody can be that stupid.

Taking them out or getting them isn't enough as you will need all those who are authorized to launch an attack...Do you really think only the president has the codes?
Am not talking about taking them out but obtaining it from them as they are soft targets. The President and his V.P are the only people that has it AFAIK. Although I think they print them at Fort Mede so it might be there but only an insane spy will want to infiltrate there.

Don't mind them. Would there even be enough time to hold a sitting in Congress not to talk about bickering. A ballistic missile launched from Russia would detonate on US soil within 20 mins of launch.

Well said bro. That's a very poor advice that is highly porous. The moment rouge nations know about US's inability to launch a nuclear attack, they stop respecting them... When the president lacks full control of the nuclear weapons, infiltration is imminent.

There are actually nothing like nuclear weapons it is all a hoax, no nuclear bomb was ever dropped on Japan. Nuclear bombs are as real as a unicorn, falls under the same category as the mythical moon landing. But we are in the season of revelations and this lies will be exposed once and for all.

That's not the point the writer is driving. The writer rather wanted a joint agreement by various parties before an attack and not necessarily sharing the codes.

Deterrence theory. The president has it and presses the button the bombs fires and saves the day; great right. But when you have many channels to validate before attack your enemy might have already dealt with you before you coordinate your own attack. Having a single trusted source is the better choice IMHO.

Yes, I edited. The president of USA is the most heavily guarded human on earth, that sort of security can not the extended to others. I believe that power should rest solely with the president, if others are allowed in, then unnecessary bickering and politics will come in. Good thing the lunatic Trump didn't start a nuclear war.

This is common sense that even a person of average IQ should easily grasp. Yet these dumb heads on Nairaland are saying it is better for just ONE MAN to have the power to launch nuclear weapons without consulting anyone. Mumu people.

What do you think this means? How will he share the authority. don't be in haste to quote people in rush.
It seems you have comprehension problem.
What the whole essay is saying is that the current system whereby the president has sole power and authority to detonate nuclear bomb is dangerous. Therefore, it is being suggested that a number of people Should be put in line instead. For example, it may be said that the president can only do that after getting approval from the congress which has been briefed by the defence secretary. Now, you can see that three individuals are involve here before a nuclear weapons can be unleashed: the president, the congress, and the defence secretary.
At any rate, it is to make the process a little cumbersome for the safety sake of all.

Now you get my point. There was/is a reason they made the arrangement like that. MAD (mutually assured destruction) requires swift access to the launch or else you are done for.
