Minister of State, Labour and Employment Festus Keyamo on Monday spoke on the viral picture of him holding a cutlass during the launch of the Special Public Works Programme in his local government, Uvwie LGA, in Delta State, Igbere TV reports. The Special Public Works Programme which will employ 774,000 youths across the country for three months will include tree planting, clearing of irrigation canals among others. Following a report by ThisDay highlighting social media reactions to the viral picture, Mr Keyamo said the picture was misunderstood. “…The tools are NOT FOR EMPOWERMENT. The tools belong to Govt and are what our everyday labourers use for work. The empowerment is the total of N60,000 they’d be paid for the work in 3 months. Understand a programme before reporting it,” he said. https://twitter.com/fkeyamo/status/1348655010238836743?s=20 Explaining further, the minister wrote: “The 774,000 jobs is basically for our everyday labourers to carry out community services. It would not be financially prudent if Govt were to spend billions for expensive equipment for 3-month jobs, then spend millions again training our labourers on how to use these equipment.” https://twitter.com/fkeyamo/status/1348660185489940488?s=20 Meanwhile, Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola on Monday inaugurated the programme in Osogbo. 5 Likes 1 Share

Gani fawehin will be turning in his grave seeing what has become of Festus!! A boy from humble beginnings who stood firm against lawlessness in the abacha regime!!! He was the sole reason why most parents push their kids to study law in the south south!! If the Angel in charge of Ken saro wiwa can ever grant him audience then his only request will be "Can I go back and slap kenyamo just once? " I wouldn't blame him thou, he came to Abuja with his loads packed in a polythene back to squat with a friend and now he is living in one of the finest estate in Asokoro. Why wouldn't he trade his people and conscience for a full spoon of porridge. 39 Likes 5 Shares |

I support Keyamo here. The FG shouldn't be expected to buy tractors or whatever for this job. People should just go to work and collect their N20k before it ends. 8 Likes 2 Shares |

When there are sophisticated equipment to make their works easy the insensitive Government is sharing Cutlass and hoes for people because it is "community service". Because you want to pay them 20,000 monthly they should undergo hard labour because they are labourers. Sometimes it is better for Buhari's appointees to shut their mouth than open it and make insensitive comments. Is Keyamo children among the labourers so that he can know how easy is to clear bushes and irrigation with Cutlass and hoe. 35 Likes 2 Shares |
