JosEast: “Where we were supposed to be given $2 billion every year in the last 20 years, they were giving us $260 million. But from last year, after the amendment, it is $2 billion annually,” he said. This type of statement from Lawan actually emphasizes the issue with the mentality of Nigerian government officials. There is nothing like Nigeria 'was supposed to be given...'. Companies operate according to the law. If Nigerian government demonstrated gross complicity and incompetence in not reviewing and amending it's laws for decades, that is not the fault of any company. Immediately the law changed, IOC's complied. IOC's like all companies can make presentations to NASS to mitigate unfavorable provisions in amendments to the law. It is also the responsibility of NASS to ensure that amendments are not unduly harsh on companies to the extent that the industry is no longer viable to companies, as this will affect the government in terms of tax receipts and unemployment. |

Like everything; a family, a house, a community, a state or country. It is not how much you make but how much you wisely spend. Nigerians will boldly declare how much they spend per kilometer of road, rail, bridge or project greater than anywhere in the world. They will easily explain it with imports of everything including pencils and tooth picks. Nigerians Amaka. |

I don't believe him. We had issues with access to onshore fields yet we were racking in billions for federal sharing. Where were the billions coming from? That 260million per year can't be correct. I just searched on Google for further info. One particular facility is sized for 220kbopd. Let's say it does 150kbopd. That is 55m barrels in a year - one field. We have over 5 deepwater facilities in offshore Nigeria. Cost of oil has been on average above 40 dollars per barrel (not bothered to fully calculate). The mathematics and economics don't add up. Royalty are often above 50%. I call this Bullshit!! |
