Just one example of why cost of a project cannot be the same in every country

Truth is, the cost of constructing roads in the south-south region is very high, simply because of the nature of our terrain. For instance, the 38km Bodo-Bonny Road construction is to gulp approximately 200bN, a 38km road ooo! why?
ok, the road alignment spans through very natural soft marshy terrain accosted with varying degree of water level.
Some proposed section of the road embankment is up to 5m in height, now you should know settlement will be of significant importance, hence the use of pvds to quicken the settlement rate and geotextile material to improving it's stability. All of this will surely bring about an increase in construction cost. Similar issues with the Second Niger Bridge.
Now, let's look at the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road construction with approximately 400km in length, it's construction cost is about 165bN, waooo! We all know the terrain up North.

Shut up if you have nothing to say. Onitsha where the bridge is located is not a south south zone. Stop defending the indefensible

All those comparisons i posted, is there any one that is not in marshy terrain. Is the any bridge over water that is not in marshy terrain? Or is there anything special with the Niger river? The bridges I posted, are over rivers and lagoons that are far larger and wider than the Niger river. Look at a second picture of one of the examples, So this ain't marshy?

Imagine a road Embankment up to 5m high at some sections of the road alignment. Estimating a sandfill vol of about 4million cum at a rate say #14,000 per cum, what ya get ??

From onitsha to obosi where d bridge and the road is located, none of the place has marshy terrain.

Acoording to Juilus Berger 3.8 million m3 was required for the roads. From quick research now, A 20T truck carries 16m3 at the cost of 40,000NGN. This results in total cost of 9.5 billion NGN or 24 million dollars. So thats not where the heavy costs came from. Concrete works take the most amount, so from Julius berger website 153000m3 of concrete was required. Inputing that into project estimation websites show that the project cost should not go beyond $100milllon with price fluctuations. and concrete foundations are usually cheaper than the beams. So you can reduce that to about 65 million dollars.

Just imagine your thought process!

You took the words out of my mouth. He couldn't comprehend the submission of OP. A similar thing happened when the LNG project was built. A similar project in Indonesia cost 800 million dollars! what the government of the day told us was the cost was about 1.7billion dollars. I weep for Nigeria.

Seun, Lalasticlala, Plese help, so Nigerians can see the truth

The Second Niger Bridge Project costs a whopping N414bn (approx $1.09B). The bridge alone costs N206bn ($540m), while the link roads cost 208bn ($545m). This puts it very close to the most expensive bridges in the world. While there has been far costlier bridge projects in the world, the Niger Bridge has nothing spectacular about its design or the terrain to justify the heavy expenditure. It is neither a suspension bridge (Supension bridges can be very costly) nor a cable stayed one. It is just a beam bridge and these are the cheapest bridge designs you can ever find. Secondly we can't even say that the Niger is very deep or the topography is a mountaneous one that requires complex foundations or towering beams. Additionally, the Niger bridge is just 1.6km. Beam Bridges that surpass this in cost have had to multiply the distance by nothing less than twenty times and cheaper bridges are even far longer. For example, the Dhola Sadiya Bridge, a similar beam bridge in india (a country with labour and construction costs similar to ours), completed in 2017, has a length of 9.15km and a span that is equal to one twin of the 2nd Niger bridge. Now, doing the math, 3.2km of this bridge should be similar in costs to the 1.6km Second Niger Bridge, but things get shockingly funny. This bridge only costs $158 million totally so 3.2km of the bridge should be about $53 million. But here our bridge being made of 'gold' and not reinforced concrete costs $540 millon. Lets drive home the seriousness of this inflation with another example. Kacchi Dargah–Bidupur Bridge is under construction in india (Started in 2017, after Second Niger Bridge, and will commissioned in 2021, before Second Niger Bridge) is a six lane bridge(Second Niger bridge is six-lane as well). Now see its peculiarites, Firstly it is a 9.76km suspension bridge (Remember I said, suspension bridges are costly) with 13.24 km of approach roads. Now, the Second Niger Bridge is 1.6km bridge with 10.3km of approach roads. Let me shock you, the Kacchi Dargah–Bidupur Bridge total project costs only $699 milllon dollars while its baby brother in Nigeria has a net worth of $1.09bn. Is the Nigerian Government not wonderful?

I have a clue to the reason for all this. Maybe, its because the Nigerian Government is not paying for it, as well as other projects Nigerians are celebrating. Go check the costs. There seems to be an agreement between the Nigerian Government and its Chinese investors to heavily take advantage of the huge Nigerian population and use unreasonable costs to build infrastructure and dupe citizens. If you don't know, these bridges are being tolled, the railways are being paid for by Nigerians. The old bridge will be blocked to major traffic and every driver, transporter, commuter, sheep, goat, cow, anything at all passing that bridge will pay that $1.09bn to the last dime. This goes for the railways as well. Since railways are cheaper to run, the tickets will be hiked and Nigerians will pay the bloated costs. This is daylight robbery.

Nobody is against the bridge. Read the article, costs of construction is bloated and used as a means to extort money. The handlers of that bridge will toll it for a whole 25 years.

Re: The Shocking Outrageous Expenditure On The Niger Bridge And The Ongoing Fraud by IamAtikulate: 6:10pm On Jan 19
I don't have problem with the cost, my only problem is that the bridge is too low to allow ship to go under to Onitsha if the East decides to dredge the Niger.

This means any meaningful port can only be built at Ogbaru when we already have a port at Onitsha.

Ogbaru to Onitsha by road is over 2 hours.

They should award the contract for the bridge at inflated price like PDP and then pocket the money without execution as they have done for 16 years? Is it what you want?
