Nigeria Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was one of the top personalities in world to gain popular traction across the social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter inclusive, in the year 2020.

Osinbajo, a workaholic, is not a usual deputy, spectators opined, considering the position he took on national issues.

More Nigerians have commended him for standing by the people, while few others blamed him for the inactions of the government.

Punch reported on Saturday, January 16, that FG snubbed an Osinbajo report, in a story titled “COVID-19: Again, FG snubs Osinbajo report, mobilises corpers to camps”.

The story according to many Nigerians is a smear campaign against the growing popularity of the Vice-President.

The All Progressives Congress through its handle, @APCNigeria, wrote: “This headline is both sensational and false. The ESP report that suggested the consideration of suspension of NYSC orientation was approved both by the President and FEC. That takes the matter farther from Osinbajo.”

Twitter users soon joined in on the chatter. A twitter user, @ekitiketekan, wrote “It was Economic Sustainability Committee led by VP Osinbajo that asked the FG to "consider" suspending the NYSC. It was suggestion for consideration , If campaign, church and Mosque are allow then why not NYSC. PUNCH IS USELESS”

Kate Nnaji said “Punch is as useless as it comes. The suggestion was by the Economic Sustainability committee which the VP chairs. The committee was set up to mitigate the impact of COVID19 on Nigeria & the nation. Churches, mosques, bars etc weren’t allowed to open then and so was for the camps”.

CBN Governor Akin wrote “PUNCH and USELESS HEADLINES. Osinbajo report or FEC? FEC approved the ESP with the President's endorsement. After the Report, NYSC reviewed the situation, Mandated Covid19 Test by NCDC for ALL Corps Members.
So as to detect COVID-19 positive & now they have ok the situation”.

Daniel Ojo said “A false news at its rising again. This is false which disregards the effort of the FG. There are proves that earlier decision has been made with the efforts of the VP Osibanjo”.

“To be very honest, Punch has totally lost it”, says Alabi Dee.

According to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the executive functions of the Nigerian vice president includes participation in all cabinet meetings and, by statute, membership in the National Security Council, the National Defence Council, Federal Executive Council, and the Chairman of National Economic Council.

Although the vice president may take an active role in establishing policy in the Executive Branch by serving on such committees and councils, the relative power of the Nigerian vice president's office depends upon the duties delegated by the president.

Other functions of the Vice - President are in sections 4, 5, 6, 130, 141, 148(1) and paragraphs 5, 16, 18 and 25 of the third schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

Also, Barr. Onyekachi Umah in his article titled “WHY THE VICE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA HAS NO POWERS OR DUTIES OF HIS OWN AND HAS NO RIGHTS TO PRESIDENTIAL POWERS” said “there is no powers or duties specifically vested on the Vice President of Nigeria, although it is a creation of constitution”.

But Osinbajo, a former university teacher, has done more by raising the bar and earning the trust of his principal.

Just before the #EndSARS protests, the Vice - President had admonished the executive and legislature to focus on what they have been elected or appointed to do which is to improve welfare of the people.

Speaking at the Executive - Legislature leadership retreat, he said “So, my brothers and sisters, it is time to focus on what we have been elected or appointed to do; this is the welfare of our people.

“The law and practice as between parliament and executive is a means to an end not an end to itself; the means must not jeopardise the end.

“Our people just want food on their table, shelter over their heads, clothing on their bodies, healthcare and education for their children and themselves.’’

Aftermath the protest against the police high handedness, the VP led National Economic Council also directed the immediate establishment of State-based Judicial Panels of Inquiry to investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra judicial killings with a view to delivering justice for all victims of the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squads (SARS) and other police units.
