Re: Maize Cultivation: Cost To Farm A Hectare? by wapo: 9:59am On Jan 21, 2021
ploughing and ridging N30000
seeds N2000
herbicides N5000
insecticides (caterpillar force)2sachetN3800
second herbicides paraquat 5000
harvesting 30000
shelling 10000
miscellaneous 7000
TOTAL=N92800,let say N100000 will finish 1hectare depending on maybe you will rent labour or you are going to do it yourself now
EXPECTED YIELD FOR 1HECTARE IS LIKE 7tonnes a tonne goes for like 120000naira,so 7tonne=7*120000=840,000naira

Is there no need for weeding at any point? Just been curious...

How long does it takes corn plantation from planting to harvest?

When (Month) is best for planting?

Can one plant year round if one has access to say water (Irrigation) ?

I doubt this caalculations.
What of the cost of planting, first and second weeding, cost of spraying and cost of applying chemicals?
Also, if farmers will be getting 840k from just one hectare of land, most rich people in town would be farmers but alas, they are the most struggling reason why youths are not motivated to go into farming.
I don't think your calculation is feasible bro, just an observation.

There's no need for Weeding, depending on a number of factors, 2 applications of herbicide should suffice.

Most maize reaches maturity in roughly 2 months though there are varieties that take longer. Sun drying will depend on weather it's rainy season or dry season. Dry season maize is easier to dry because of little or no rainfall after the maize reaches maturity. Let's say another 2 months.

Rainy season is safer because of "guaranteed" rainfall but it's harder to sun dry for the same reason.
Dry season maize is easier to dry but there is the risk of rain not falling when your maize needs it.

Technically, yes you can plant year round but it's not as easy as it sounds.

Thank you so much for your contribution.

I believe irrigation can solve the rain issue.

paperwork. you will work to make 200k out of the farm .this r the kind of cal that send investor to treatment table at the end of it all. you must b a joker if u r thinking of making 840k from a ha of maize.

The thread is an open one but typically, the ones who "know all" only know how to castigate and condemn without making any corrections or clearing the OP's needs. Mr. wapo thanks jare!!!

My analysis on maize farm are
1. Clearing of land
2. Ploughing or making ridges
3. Planting of maize seed
4. Spraying of herbicides (atrazine plus glyphosate and 2-4 D or atrazine plus paraquat)
5. Replanting of ungerminated seeds
6.after 2 weeks if army worm are showing up apply caterpillar force
7. If maize has stunted growth apply urea
8.when maize is about 3 weeks and there are weeds on the farm apply striker plus 2-4D
9. If there are no weeds at the stage wait till a month plus and apply paraquat at the emergence of weeds
10. When maize is showing tassel scantily try and apply urea the second time for optimum yield ( it depends on land fertility Sha )
And then do your expenses calculation from this and God willing you meet good price in the market .
11. Fresh maize takes 70 days to harvest while dry maize takes 90 days
