Yoruba leaders on Satur­day waded into the controversy trailing the quit notice is­sued to Fulani herdsmen in Ibarapa Local Govern­ment Area of Oyo State by Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba ethnic activist.

Igboho had on Friday stormed the area with a large number of his supporters bearing arms in fulfilment of his promise to dislodge the Fulani in the area, who he accused of serial murder and kidnapping.

Following the develop­ment, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Ada­mu, ordered the Commission­er of Police in Oyo State, Ngo­zi Onadeko, to arrest Igboho immediately and transfer him to Abuja.

However, speaking with SUNDAY INDEPENDENT on Saturday, a credible source said many people had advised the Federal Government against arresting Igboho as doing so might trigger anoth­er fresh round of crisis.

It was gathered that Afenifere leaders had also spoken with Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Ig­boho on the need to manage the issue with caution so as not to lead to ethnic crisis in other parts of the country.

“I don’t think he (Igboho) will be arrested as being re­ported. Many Yoruba elders, especially those in Reuben Fasoranti-led Afenifere, had waded in to ensure peace in the South West and align po­sitions on way forward.

“They believe that Igboho is fighting a just cause though his approach may not be ac­ceptable,” our source said.

SUNDAY INDEPENDENT also gathered that a govern­ment delegation would today visit trouble spots in Ibara­pa, Igangan and other parts of the area to assess situa­tion.

The new Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, will lead the police delega­tion, to be joined by officers and men of the police tacti­cal team already deployed from Abuja.

The team would meet stakeholders and tradition­al rulers and assess the ex­tent of damage, if any. They would also engage the youths and calm frayed nerves.

It was not clear as at press time who would lead the gov­ernment team, but sources said Governor Makinde had constituted a high powered delegation among his senior officials to embark on this trip.

“A full report of the Ibara­pa situation will be made public by the government and the Police after the as­sessment tour,” a source said.

Sources said that the team on the government side had been mandated to dissuade the stakeholders from undu­ly politicising the situation at hand, or fueling ethnic tension.
