Angry Voters Set Inec Office Ablaze In Kaduna! by henry101(m): 9:43pm On Apr 03, 2011
Angry voters in Anchau, Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State, on Saturday set ablaze the INEC office in the area after chasing away the members of staff of the commission.

Many of the voters who claimed to have arrived at the various polling stations in the area as early as 6.30am, decided to go to the INEC office to verify the reasons for the delay in the arrival of election officers and voting materials.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that tempers flared and a violent protest ensued when there was no INEC official on hand to explain the situation to the demonstrators who subsequently set the INEC office in the area ablaze.

Unspecified number of persons were also said to have been injured. Several calls put through by our correspondent to the INEC Acting Public Affairs Officer, Mrs. Fatima Bande, were not answered.

Also in Zaria, irate youths numbering about 500 beat up and stripped naked a man suspected to be in possession of ballot papers at a polling unit in Durumin Maigarke. The police unsuccessfully tried to rescue the suspect. The youths tore his dress and used it to tie his hands behind him.

The Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties and second republic governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, alleged that the postponement of the election was a ploy by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to secure an extension of the tenure of its current political office holders.

Musa alleged that since the 1999 constitution allowed the government in power to remain in office till the conduct of the next election, the PDP government was taking every step to truncate the April elections with the ultimate aim of extending its stay in office.

He said, “What this means is that the PDP is going to have a third term in office. The 1999 constitution says that when elections fail to hold, the governors and the President should remain in power till such a time when elections are conducted.

“By May 29, the President and the governors will continue and you know that the National Assembly will not allow them to continue without them and so, they will go and amend the constitution to take care of them

Why would any right thinking individual do such.
Does it mean that if one of their candidates looses the election, there would be missile attacks all over the north.
Damn it. tongue

It tells you people don't trust their leaders - which is like a vote of no convidence on the current government. It is sad that things have degerated to this level of followers not trusting anything their leaders say.

We all know how this election will end. GEJ will win. Northern leaders will rile up their people. They will attack Southerners like they normally do in contested elections. I see dark days for Nigeria. God bless my family in Kaduna, Kano and Jos. I hope they are safe.

It looks like there will be killings in the north if GEJ is declared the winner.

why strip any one naked? islam forbids such extreme, including beating of the 'honored' face, or victimizing anybody.

why are muslims forgetting so quickly when they get emotional?

destruction of property is forbidden, just as well.

This is a sad development, why must people be so senile atimes  cry. Guess they are merely safeguarding and carrying out BB instruction to protect their votes from election riggers often interpreted to mean being hostile to perceived ill events. INEC poor PR just fueled their believe. Not good for the elections.

I thought you people always claimed that Kaduna was Sambo's territory and thus solidly for GEJ. Why are you now unwilling to claim these people now all of a sudden?

We are yet to see more violence from north, west, east and south-south. What with the perennial postponing of elections timetable. I foresee people becoming more violent. May God save Nigeria.

@henry101,
if there is anyone that is not thinking right here, i think it is u and those silly inec officials. do u live ur life taking ppl for granted? why will a national appointment be cancelled without notice?
inec is such a big institution that it can circulate massage through every possible means so that people shld go about their normal daily activities.
it is high time nigerian rulers knew we are not the goats they take us for.
this is a massage to the rulling gangstars. at least, they will start understanding it that the masses are not happy with them.

You are a great prophet. This is just what is going to happen. Let everyone mark my words. Any reasonable southner living in the north should begin now to park his or her things in preparation for going home. It is clear that there is going to be a bloody and severe religious and ethnic crisis in the north after Good luck Jonathan is declared winner. Whether rigged or not Jonathan will win the presidency.

I sort of reason along with you.
We cry for change blah blah and when the change comes we still moan.
Inec failed to inform them that the election has been postponed. They interpreted the silence as been disenfranchised from the elections.
Inec shares part of the blame . . .and definitely wud get the message; No biz as usual anymore, rigging won't be tolerated.
