Schalke took a giant stride towards the final four of the Champions League with a 5-2 drubbing of Internazionale in a highly entertaining first leg of their quarter-final clash in Milan.

Inter, who were hoping for a positive response to a 3-0 defeat to city rivals Milan in Serie A at the weekend, were simply blown away by three second half goals at the Giuseppe Meazza as Schalke effectively ended the Italian side's reign as European champions.

A brace from Brazilian striker Edu, strikes from Joel Matip and Raul and an Andrea Ranocchia own-goal did the damage for Schalke, who twice cancelled out Inter goals - by Dejan Stankovic and Diego Milito.

Inter ended the night with 10 men following Cristian Chivu's second dismissal in a week and, barring a remarkable turnaround in a fortnight in Gelsenkirchen, it will be Schalke who go on to play wither Manchester United or Chelsea in the semi-finals,
