Utter hogwash.. Most of you have this problem of trying to pontificate on issues way above your pay grade! You don't even have the slightest knowledge of what you're talking about but you're determined to talk like an authority on the issue! If any discerning mind doesn't see any correlation between Sarduanas attacks in the middle belt using the army and buharis attack on the same middle belt using the herdsman, then you are just politically naive. To say tht herdmens killings have been here way before Buhari, as if what is going on now is somewhat normal is to say the least criminal! NPC was not just all about the North, the NPC was interested in subjugating the south violently and there are many instances were Sarduana went wild with his demeaning outbursts against the south! Balewa was his willing lackey and as such culpable! A policy of segregation was in full force within the northern civil service for instance, were whites were constitutionaly preferred to be recruited to jobs that can be done by qualified easterners! Sarduana was a rampaging nuisance!

Way before the coup, Nzeogwu has complained bitterly about the desperate attempts by the northern minister of defence to flood the army with hordes of unqualified northerners! This was when the buharis, the Abachas, the Babangidas and co were all railroaded into the army with their amorphous certificates to beef up the northern numbers there.. He complained of the federal minister using Hausa to address Nigerian soldiers at parades! Could not understand why the soldiers state of origin has to be ascertained in such events! Moaned about corruption and unproductivity in government. Even danjuma has talked about this..Please go and read "The Nigerian five Majors" by Gbulie.. Soldiers were used to squash the Tiv uprising leading to the killings of many! Akintola was always flying into Kaduna in the dead of the night while "operation wetie" was ongoing in the west to plot with the Sarduana! It led to Awolowo being jailed,.. the 1964 general elections being rigged! And the western streets littered with bodies! The country was spiralling out of control while the Sarduana was talking about Nigeria being his grandfather's "estate"! He needed to be stopped and a gallant officer did that!
nonsense. You ended up saying the same thing i said led to the coup.
Everyother thing u said up that have always happened and still happening.
Nzeogwu could have arrested instead of killing sarduana et all....just like the coups that ended gowon, shagari, and buhari govts. Igbos have not recovered from His thoughtless action....and in the years immediately after, we paid with 3 million people. Whatever sarduana was planning, he succeded. Not only did igbos get decimated, we practically handed the country over to aboki in 1967. They put us in OIC, they created multiple states to distabiles us. They removed us from federal civil service, they control everything in nigeria today because of the events of 1966. What did ur galant nzeogwu actually achieve?

Nzeogwu was foolish and gave Igbophobic entities in Nigeria the window of opportunity that had been craving to hammer Ndiigbo.

He set the ball rolling, Ironsi complicated issues, and Ojukwu was left with a mission impossible to deal with.
But it was he(Nzeogwu) who started it all. It was stupid of Nzeogwu to want to interfer with what was happening in Western region, he was Igbo and it was none of his business.

Nigerians are still as Igbophobic as yesterday, even worst now, which is why I have been shouting from rooftops that Ndiigbo should maintain golden silence on any issue happening in Nigeria that is not directly related to us. I advised we stay off end SARS protest, IPOB and MNK wouldn't listen and we paid the price in Obigbo.
Similarly, we should only mind Herdsmen menace in SE and Proudly Igbo parts of SS( this excludes Ikwerre,Ekpeye ,Ndokwa/Ukwuani and Ogba) . We should not think we have any allies outside Igbo land, we should learn to see non Igbo's in Nigeria for who they are.
We don't want another senseless Nzeogwu who would present Ndiigbo as sacrificial lamb for a national problem. We all saw how Lagos-Ibadan media propaganda machine twisted Lagos SARS protest and Oba palace sacking to anti Igbo rhetorics and indictment of IPOB and MNK, simply because MNK and IPOB stupidly reenacted Nzeogwu foolery again. If not for the power of social media that Ndiigbo now has to counter them, we could be talking of second Igbo progrom starting from Lagos.
This was how they twisted Nzeogwu intents and actions unchallenged , and appealled to innate Igbophobia of Nigerians.

Nzeogwu is not an Igbo hero. He is a bad egg Ndiigbo must watch out for in the future and ensure we subdue before he puts us in harm's way.

Let's look at it this way..
If the Sarduana finished with the west, and having rigged the lethargic NCNC out sort of, who was next? Zik and the Igbos. It's very pedestrian to analyze tht coup as simply an event unleashed to stop the carnage in the west! Before the mayhem there, Igbos have been killed in several massacres up north. Sarduana has made documented anti igbo rhetorics and the alliance between the NPC and NCNC was already crumbling fast because of his wayward ambitions and Azikiwes obstinacy..

The problem with that coup was not Nzeogwu! That coup needed to happen! Lack of action shouldn't be an alternative and the fact was that after waiting for a full year to call the so-called winning parties to form a government, Azikiwe has practically played his last card at a peaceful resolution of the ensuing conflict! The problem was with ifeajuna and his disjointed prosecution of the coup down south and Ironsis alarming mishandling of the aftermath. The coup happened! It failed but an Igbo was still in charge! What did he do next? He started to bend backwards by employing northern officers as his guards! Did Gowon do that? Did Murtala do that? You have to consolidate with trusted hands!

As far as I'm concerned, if there was anything wrong with Nzeogwus adventures that evening, it was his unwillingness to extend maximum violence to any unit that disagreed with his command that night! The desperate situation then demands that.. Revolutions are never tea parties! It was an operational exigency that was broadsided by his comrades in Lagos! They paid dearly for that..You want to see how to hyjack power and consolidate ruthlessly thereafter, read about how the northern officers eliminated every opposition after their July coup! I mean as an Igbo, I'm at the receiving end, but you have to give it to them on that score; they never prevaricated at the most important moments! With the benefit of hindsight, if the likes of Abacha, Buhari and Babangida were all given the Sarduana treatment, you don't think Nigeria would have been a better place today..? Was that not what Jerry Rawlings did in Ghana?

which perspective? If you know what is callled deductive reasoning then u know u can deduce what caused something to happen by looking at series of events leading up to the main event.

I dont need another perspective to know for instance that GEJ lost in 2015 in part because many nigerians were tired of pdp.

Nzeogwu is nobody's hero. He was disliked by zik, ojukwu and ironsi

the 1967 counter coup was also another misadventure.
The only reason we can now say the north succeeded was because ojukwu failed to carve out Biafra.
Their thoughtless action (especially in terms of the pogrom) could have backfired grievously.
Thinking about all these now just makes me smh. I guess the actors then didn't have the benefit of hindsight.
Another thing you have to know was that Gowon is not Fulani or Hausa nor Móslem. Giving him power in 1967 was a big mistake by Murtala. Because he was from middle belt and his people had a score to settle with the core north too.
These guys just took gambles that year. Many paid dearly while a few succeeded exceedingly

Bros,
You have to understand how power works before you go for it... You talk a lot like one Goodluck Jonathan. Naivety? How can you look at the immense gains the north has made over the last half a century because of the rewards of that coup and still fault them? Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, universities, dams , agriculture, defence, Dangote... It was worth it! I'm talking of what should be here, not dwelling on the utopian, I'm being practical... They were presented with the chance by Ironsi, ... They went for it and did a good job at it.. The rest is history.. Even before Nzeogwu struck, zik has already been schemed out by the emerging Sarduana/Tafawa/Akintola alliance. So what was there else to do? Military intervention was the fad then. The Igbos dominated the military but lack of decisiveness and ruthlessness were the bane. You can't be preaching about what is supposed to be when you have the opportunity to grab power in an undefined political environment with mega rewards in oil and gas.. That to me is a whole load of claptrap.. You go and do what you have to do to dominate. Simple..

Allowing Saraduna to FINISH off the south west was the right way to go, since it was obvious we couldn't form alliance with them because of irreconcilable differences. It would have taken the SW out of the picture during the war and earned us more international support.

This is also the same approach we MUST take in herdsmen issue. We guard our home turf and maintain golden silence on events happening in SW and all non Igbo parts of Nigeria. If Fulanis prevail there, good outcome, it would mean less opponent to gang up against us and would give more weight to our international herdsman attacks agenda. If the SW or any other part of Nigeria wins, good and good, it would ensure the Fulanis don't get strong enough.

The advantage of allowing Saraduna finish up West was that it would have been a long protracted battle between both of them, leaving the winner weakened and easier for us to mop up later.

Nzeogwu was a fool for getting Ndiigbo entangled in that mess. The Yorubas were never going to go down without putting up a fight, which would leave the North weakened and made our Biafra push easier.

Problem with Nzeogwu coup was that it wasn't supposed to happen at all. The North had SW in a choke hold. Neither the North nor SW are our friends. Both are potential enemies. The right action was to allow their fight get to logical conclusion and mop up any one of them that emerged from that showdown, because they would have become weakened in the process.

Its akin to watching your two potential enemies fight, but rather than watch from afar and train to deal with the winner of the fight. You foolishly got yourself involved in the fight and became accused of being partial in separating the fight by both of them, who then used you to find a middle ground and reconcile with each other.
It was a stupid move by Nzeogwu and co. Of course, Ironsi folly made it worse. But it was Nzeogwu that set things in motion.

Everything was wrong with Nzeogwu intervention and here they are:

1. He stupidly assumed there was a one Nigeria

2. The above meant he couldn't identify the West and North as natural and potential enemies to Ndiigbo

3. What was happening to the West was none of Ndiigbo concern as there is no difference between North and South west. They are just two sides of same coin from an Igbo perspective.

4. Ndiigbo were premiers of two out of four of Nigeria, we were more than capable of handling whatever the North could have thrown at us after they were done with SW. This would also have meant that SW, especially Awolowo would be out of the picture. Increasing our chances against the North in the final showdown.

5. He should have known that he couldn't control how the coup would pan out once he set it in motion. In life, if anything can go wrong ,then it will most likely go wrong

Lessons to be learnt from Nzeogwu is that whenever there is a national issue, Ndiigbo should watch from afar and allow our would be enemies finish off each other, then we tackle who ever emerges victorious among them.
That way we wouldn't suffer a gang up again.
The MNK and IPOB nearly succeeded in stupidly reenacting Nzeogwu folly during the EndSARS saga, and the SW media nearly succeeded in setting Ndiigbo up again for massacre, if not for the gift of social media Ndiigbo now have at our disposal. We might not be that lucky in the future, hence why we must snuff out and silence any Igbo trying to re enact Nzeogwu folly again.
Those who don't learn from their history will repeat it again.

Nzeogwu might be a hero to some people, but he is no hero to me. He was a man lacking in foresight and rational analytical mindset. He was a disaster to Ndiigbo.
