I cannot blame the teacher. Most students are very stubborn. Now the matter has reached the court of public opinion, everyone will blame the teacher. Most students deserve it. |

RisenPhoenix1: Another blanket statement. There are some states even in the liberal United States where corporal punishment is still allowed, and backed fully by law. In fact, spanking is still allowed in many states of the United States. South Korea is one of the most developed countries on Earth. And yet, corporal punishment is allowed there. Since all forms of punishments are morally justified, maybe he should have slaughtered or hanged her for not doing her assignment. Slaughtering or hanging is not a form of punishment. Punishment wants to associate pain or discomfort with bad behaviors so that the person being punished can avoid that bad behavior. When you kill them, you have not punished them. That is why capital punishment does not make any sense as far as the essence of punishment is concerned. Corporal punishment teaches a child nothing other than "might is right", and how to abuse a position of greater strength over your fellow man. That is why victims of abuse almost always abuse others whenever they can. So, sending a child to detention does not show that "might is right"? The reason why punishment don't work sometimes is because of this opinion of yours. Instead of the person being punished to realize that they have done something bad, they will think the person punishing them is wicked. Punishment becomes effective if the child can associate the pain with their bad behavior. Once they realize that if they do this, something they don't like will happen to them, they will avoid that bad behavior. For example, denying a child chocolate because he didn't do his chores is a form of punishment. If the child thinks you are wicked, then your punishment will not be effective since the child failed to see the essence of the punishment. |

BluntTheApostle:Abuse in the name of discipline Lazy teacher Have you ever thought you might be the reason they don't do their assignment, no bcoz it's them that should always be at fault not you. I experience this horror in school and believe me none of those teachers deserve my respect or time today. |

obinna58: Nawa for una. So, criminals should be let off the hook because of unemployment? There is a reason for operant conditioning. Punishment is necessary for making children comply. Give me one way that I could have been the reason why they couldn't submit their assignments? And also tell me the meaning of abuse? Is abuse only physical? What about parents who shout at their children? Is that not a form of abuse. Is scolding not a form of abuse? Is abuse only abuse when it is physical? |

BluntTheApostle: I did not equate corporal punishment with underdevelopment, you did. As far as I know, there's no correlation in that direction. I equated it only with future potential for a cycle of child abuse. If you see the culture in South Korea (your citation) extremely violent bullying is a very real problem among the children. The children have come to believe that if you can overpower someone, you are justified in causing him pain. BluntTheApostle: Being slaughtered or hung does associate pain and discomfort with bad behaviour, and it does discourage bad behaviour; at least in the surviving audience. Social psychologists would disagree with you that it is not a form of punishment, but it is not something that should be pursued here. What of cutting of hands? Should they cut off a hand to discourage assignment skipping? Surely that will discourage future bad behaviour? What of using hot pressing irons, pouring boiling water on them, using razor blades to cut their bodies? All these have been reported. Are they also valid forms of punishment? BluntTheApostle: It shows a form of might is right but within limits...that might does not bestow right to cause bodily harm to others; unlike corporal punishment. BluntTheApostle: No. The reason is because we think children are goats who must be dissuaded through pain because they cannot understand the concept of right or wrong. Most times, the child has no idea why he is being assaulted. In some cases, the child receives mixed input. A mother or teacher may assault a child for a deed one day and ignore it on another, further confusing the child. Sometimes, a teacher may assault a child because he (the teacher) argued with his wife before coming to school, or is frustrated at having no money to eat breakfast. Teachers also are fond of collective punishments; often whipping a whole classroom because of a few noisemakers, or because of their own inability to control the class. Sometimes, students get assaulted for not getting high marks in a subject that they never understood and the teacher never bothered to explain well; all in a bid to cover up his/her own deficiencies. When you leave corporal punishment to the whims of every frustrated, underpaid school teacher, you can rest assured that most incidents are going to be a gross miscarriage of justice. BluntTheApostle: You have reduced children to the level of animals. Once you treat your children as animals, they will grow up to reason the same way. BluntTheApostle: Once again, you have missed the point. I did not reject all forms of negative reinforcement; only the physically harmful ones. Denying a child chocolate does not establish that you have a right to assault those who are weaker than you. I would assume that any child will think that a punisher is wicked, irrespective of the type of negative reinforcement used. However, he should grow up understanding that negative reinforcements has limits; especially the bodily integrity of his fellow man. |

Everyone here talking as if it's something serious, this is not serious injury but scars of whipping, something common and we were used to few yrs back in sec school,in fact this is nothing compared to what we passed through, sometimes to point of bleeding,I still got a scar on my arm, from one of such wipping,so far it's not extreme punishment, such is ok, spare the rod, and spoil the child |

BluntTheApostle:Abuse is a cruel or violent treatment of a person. Psychological abuse is not even talked about cos it's more like error 404 in Africa, everyone is facing it. In a proper working society you're not even meant to shout at any body. How can I can give you reasons for your student misbehavior, you should trace the root. If your students are free with you there's nothing you won't solve with them but oh no they're so afraid of you but you won't admit. In a subject where lots of questions should be asked, Imagine one student will have to motivate himself, muster lots of courage and become fearless in the face of adversity just ask you one question then ends up being insulted. Mom be like "he never said anything" Dad be like "but why didn't you tell me" Then another abuse happens(the actual reason he never wanted to open up) |

RisenPhoenix1: You did. You wrote that people who use corporal punishment are regarded as social misfits elsewhere. In other words, social misfits developed South Korea. Being slaughtered or hung does associate pain and discomfort with bad behaviour, and it does discourage bad behaviour; at least in the surviving audience. You obviously don't know the meaning of punishment. It is primarily directed at the offender. Secondarily, it serves as a deterrent to others. Slaughtering may show an association between pain and the offense, but does not give the offender a chance to change. Punishment is not evil. It is not to take a life, but to make it better. It shows a form of might is right but within limits...that might does not bestow right to cause bodily harm to others; unlike corporal punishment. You are not being sincere. When you deny a child chocolate, you can cause him emotional pains. In fact, denying a child anything is a form of abuse except it is being used as a form of punishment or training. I know of people who deny their children dinner as a punishment. Is that not a show of might? If the child could earn his own money, would you be able to use your financial power over them to bully them? No. It is not only corporal punishment that can be abused. Any form of abuse can be abused. What about parents who are having a bad day at work who may come home and start scolding their children at every slight provocation? Should we outlaw punishment simply because they can be overdone or abused? You have reduced children to the level of animals. Once you treat your children as animals, they will grow up to reason the same way. Hope you know that this statement of yours will be condemned by animal lovers. Just as you find a problem with my support of corporal punishment, someone else will have a fault with your total disregard for the sentience of animals. Once again, you have missed the point. It does. When you deny a child chocolate, it shows you have the right to emotionally assault them. I have traveled in my life, and I will share some experiences here. A man denied his daughter a request because her teachers wrote a bad remark on her. The girl's request was to be taken to see a show. The girl decided that her father was mean, and so she decided to make the money herself. She stole the money. How about that? There are parents who will say, "No dinner because you didn't do your chores" Is that not emotional abuse? Some parents will say, "No pocket money for you?" Is that not financial abuse. The fact is that there is an evident imbalance of power between a punisher and the offender, otherwise the punishment will not be accepted by the offender. Even when a child punishes another child, there is always an obvious imbalance of power. |

obinna58: There are students who fail to do their assignments even in countries where students are free with their teachers. Everywhere I had taught, my students always liked me. But when they began to take me for granted, I used to quickly put them back in line. One way that students take teachers for granted is by failing to do assignments, and still come to class. Total disrespect. |
