HEALTHCARE POLITICS: Multiplicity Of Medical Schools In Kogi State by mathinips(m): 10:03am On Feb 17, 2021
Thanks for sharing this VERY EXCELLENT OPINION on the multiplicity of Medical Schools in Kogi State, with a planned establishment of another medical school in the just-established CUSTECH. There exists a STRUGGLING College of Medicine in Ayingba; and reports now have it that the new VC of FUL is considering establishment of a College of Medicine.
If the story about CUSTECH is true, I strongly believe that our governor is acting in good faith, but perhaps would need other opinions.
The universities are not supposed to be competing to have medical schools. And my initial understanding is that CUSTECH is to be technically-focused. Universitied should compete in learning, research, enterpreneurship, & service delivery.
Thus the multiplicity of medical schools in a state in Nigeria, like Kogi, that's struggling to optimize infrastructure & human capacity, shouldn't be political (notwithstanding the mantra of POLITICS OF HEALTHCARE).

(1) Kogi does NOT need TWO medical schools,

(2) Have just ONE, fund/run it well, drawing rich resources from all over..

(3) Beyond possible political, nationalistic & non-pragmatic considerations, running a medical school is not supposed to be a checking-from-the-menu program, but a serious agenda that would define other future development & endeavors. The whole world is moving for SDGs and the world in 20100. Diligent planning starts NOW.

(4) Even existing STRONG, OLD medical schools in federally-owned universities are struggling, with unimaginable stress & difficulties to secure optimal & appropriate teaching faculties.

(5) Kogi would now be having THREE medical schools: KSU, FUL, & CUSTECH!!!.... TWO/KGSG; ONE/FG.!!!

(6) Is this right? NO!!!..We cannot fund them adequately, we cannot staff them properly...We MAY end up turning out AMOs/Assistant Medical Officers!

(7)Medical schools are not Schools of Health Technology!!

(cool If it's so desire to have a training site for upcoming medical doctors in multiple locations, the state can opt for a multi-campus approach for a SINGLE College of Medicine...main campus being in either of the TWO existing state univesities.... I'll opt for Ayingba, anyway for obvious reasons.

(9) This is the time diligent apartisan stakeholders in/from Kogi to come out to give wiser counsels to our hardworking, listening & youthful governor.
This is just a patriotic duty, as professionals, to advise & counsel our state..not politics. No one knows it all!

(10) So:
*Kogi NMA speak out now

*Profs Ekele, Ogirima, Adegboro, Anjorin, Osagbemi, Ologe, Earnest Kolade, etc,.....speak!

* Drs. SA Abdullahi, Peter Alabi, Wada, Ozidu, Yisa, Olorunfemi, Abdusallam, etc..
speak!

It's never too late to reconsider options.

My opinion

Long live our able GYB, Long live Kogi State, Long live Nigeria. Shalom
