Igbos are civil and tolerant. We don't force identify on anybody like the Ijaws who are running about claiming Igbo enclaves.

Can you imagine that?!!?

He was off the mark there but Rivers state is at least 60% indigenous Igbo speaking people from Ikwerre to Ndoki to Omuma to Etche to Ogba to Egbema to Ekpeye

That is also wrong!

No matter how "indigenous Igbo" is drawn it is not close to 40 percent.

Where do you place the Ijaw and Ogoni?

In the advent of a Niger Delta republic, they just need resource control, then the idea of Biafra becomes less appealing. Biafra will be offering the same Nigerian setup where resources from one region will be used to develop the whole country. I doubt if any oil producing state will want that after Nigeria. All the talk about seaports and whatever I consider bullocks. The possibility of Biafra being landlocked is not a disadvantage. There are landlocked countries doing quite well. Whatever the case, however they break, all the countries will still have to work together one way or the other whether they like it or not.

The Ijaws may have the numbers but in the reality of a Niger Delta Republic, the power bloc will most likely be the Edos and say Deltans. I say this because the Edos are just a state and contribute about the least oil from the Niger Delta but are still such a force at national level, they know the game. They were a force way before oil, they know how to play politics thats not hinged on ‘my oil’. Something I can not say for the Ijaws and some other tribes from the SS.

The Ijaws are a large number but lack a united and formidable front. Give them resource control, they’ll walk away from the centre, they may even turn on themselves.

Where do you place the Ijaw and Ogoni?

I dont know where to put Ijaw and Ogoni, Im not a Rivers man. But If you look at these Local govt's

Etche, Ogba-Egbena-Ndoni, Omuma, Oyigbo, Obioakpo, Ikwerre, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, Emohua are all Igbo speaking

We can also contest Andoni and Portharcourt

By and large, thats about half of the local governments in Rivers state

So Ijaw, Ogoni & others are 20%? Haba

The idea that anyone bearing an Igbo name must be igbo is where most south easterners fail. A man’s identity and roots has so little to do with his name.

There are British people bearing French names, they can never identify as French. Even here in Nigeria, all those with Arabic names are Arabs? Common.

You’re right. I quick search put Igbo speaking people in Rivers at 45% but is language enough? If you understand how a lot of factors can affect and change the language and lifestyle of a people, you would rest it.

Nothing defines the identity of a people more than their language, culture, and to a considerable extent their names. The Igbos didn't colonize these Igbo speaking subgroups in Rivers state, and I'm definitely sure those Igbo speaking tribes didn't just wake up one morning and magically started speaking variants of the Igbo language... just apply common sense from a prism of rational reasoning, and it makes things less complicated.

So there is between Igbo and Ijaw?!!?

By mere fact that igbos and ijaws live side by side and coexist in so many ancestral cities establishes a relationship between igbos and ijaws.

Ijaw and yoruba have no such connection.

We even have a much stronger connection with the Yoruba. Many assume Omoyele Sowore is Yoruba but he is Ijaw from Ondo state.

Our connection with the Igbo was largely based on Igboland being a large slave market for Ijaw merchants.

Language may not be enough but it is a big factor. If there is a referendum, would you rather go with those you speak the same language with? Or stay with those you dont understand anything they are saying?

That question must be put to that 45% indigenous Igbo speaking people when Biafran referendum comes, lets see what they say.

But in every inch of ijaw land land, there are igbos there and igbo langauge is very dominant across ijaw territory...infact very many ijaw communities are bilingual, they speak igbo and ijaw

You are bilingual. You speak at least Igbo and English. Does that make you an English man?

Ijaw people are multilingual. There are Ijaw who know how to speak Itsekiri, some speak Yoruba, some speak Urhobo, others speak Ogoni, others speak Ibibio, and there are those who speak languages in countries like Gabon, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea so if some them speak Igbo as a second, third or fourth language it is not a big deal.

Igbos are in every corner of the world and Nigerian citizenship gives them mobility to live anywhere that falls under the ECOWAS treaty.

Are the Fulani not all over the place? Igbo is not dominant in Ijaw territory. These days we speak less languages. Before the minimum number of languages people spoke was four. It was important to speak many languages in a bid to facilitate international trade.

I am not culturally bilingual with igbo and English. English is a foreign language that does not belong to this continent..Ijaws are culturally bilingual because of the presence of millions of igbos indigens in the whole of SS who live side by side with ijaws

U aren't bright @ all..........That someone in Gabon learnt to speak igbo does not make them culturally igbo, igbo langauge was exported to those places, IGBO language was not exported to ijaw areas

U do not have a much stronger connection with yoruba just because Obasanjo added Ijaw villages from delta state into Ondo state just to make Ondo an oil producing state. Ijaws do not have any cultural similarity with Yorubas.

What did you smoke? Igbo?

Are the Igbo our only neighbours?

We share boundaries with the Yoruba, Urhobo, Itsekiri, Benin, Isoko, Ilaje, Ibibio, Ogoni, Ikwerre, etc.

You don't know Ijaw history if not you won't make such claims. You don't even know who the Ijaws are!

Apart from slave trade and eastern region we had no connection with the Igbo.

We don't share culture with you even though the Igbo have started copying our culture in the last 20 years yet there is still a big difference.

For us the Igbo language is just as foreign as the English language. Both were means to trade. Igbo has continued to lose its relevance with the end of slave trade. The defunct eastern region tried to force Igbo language. For that reason it became eminent that the Igbo had to be resisted.
