A small child has died after being found unresponsive in a front-loading washing machine that had been turned on.

The terrible tragedy unfolded in Christchurch, New Zealand, where police were called to the outer suburb of Hoon Hay about 5pm on Friday.

'Police are making enquiries into the circumstances of the death and the coroner has been informed.'

The child's death is not being treated as suspicious.

A large group of mourners gathered at the home on Sunday to farewell the pre-school aged child.

He had fallen inside the washing machine during laundry day where he drowned.

In 2010, a 10-day old baby girl died after her mother accidentally put her in a top-loading washing machine with the laundry.

So sad.....Witnessed this recently, thank God someone was around.

I have never really liked that side loading washing machine,I always feel I will be too lazy to bend down and start loading cloths.

It is just unfortunate this child lost his/her life.

Parents have to be more careful and cautious at everytime

He/she probably wanted to play hide-and-seek, or the noise must have sparked his/her (lawd, why didn't they reveal this baby's sex?) curiosity. Babies are so innocent. Rest in peace, little one.

You got to watch out for your kids always, the little ones don't know what they are doing
