Why Not Palm Oil As Anointing Oil In Churches? by amor4ce(m): 1:04am On Apr 10, 2011
I am yet to come across any church in Nigeria that uses palm oil or any other locally derived oil for anointing purposes. Instead olive oil which is not native to this region is used. Is there any justification or is it a manifestation of mental slavery?

No, its not a manifestation of mental slavery.

Besides, olive oil is healthier as palm oil contains trans fats which will clog your arteries.

Will you say that western scientists have not tried to promote their own oils over an above palm oil? A Malaysian would probably tell you that the negative reports about palm oil have been a ruse. Besides palm oil has been of importance to traditional religions in Nigeria south of the sahel.

The negative reports about palm oil have been a ruse you say.

Well, just watch your intake, thats all.

you have a good question. It does seem to make more sense that churches should use palm oil. however, the oil used in the bible is olive oil. So its natural that the churches would also use this type of oil.

But would that have been the case if Israel was situated somewhere in the tropics like the Equator?

Of course not. There is nothing intrinsically special about olive oil, its just very common in the mediteranean and was extreamly valued and versatile.

I didn't know that people eat anointing oil. I don't want to die from cholesterol just because I want to get anointed o!

Adin is rejected by almost all the orisha in traditional religion except for Osanyin, so somehow I doubt that Yahweh will have anything to do with it.

It is Epo that they all like.

I wonder what would happen if the global economy collapsed and there was no more importation of Olive oil. Would anointing just stop?

Is it not obvious that development of rituals are influence considerably by context. Contexts such as the availability of stuffs, the terrain, the weather, politics etc etc.
e.g synagogue worship developed in judaism when the Jews were taken to exile in babylon and could no longer access the temple. That is the origin of the sect of the Pharisees and Rabbinical judaism.

All religions evolve as circumstances change.

rofl! i dont know about the philosophy behind anointing altogether but having said that using oil palm seems much more REAL to me as this product is readily available. just hope the commercialist arent peeping at this thread because they'll be realy sick to not be able to sell to us there unneccessary products. Its a case of demand and supply; they make us think we need it and then once they've achieved that, sell it to us at exhorbitant prices.

i was being sarcastic but olive oil is healthier than palm oil.

doesnt mean people should stop cooking with it, but we just need to be more careful.

as per your orisha reference- different religion, different practice.

for churches, if olive oil isnt available then vegetable oil is also used.

the point here is the oil should be clear, ideally.

Okay @tpiah!, I do appreciate the clarification you have offered. I don't do follow-follow worship and accept all that I hear hook, line and sinker. I am assuming that asking such questions help remove doubts and strengthen my belief.

It was a Jewish practice. We don't need the Olive oil nor palm oil. The sacrament we have to take is the communion

Perhaps we should be using Palm Wine for the holy communion then. I know many non-christians would get converted just to get a free taste every month  cheesy

oil is oil. the anointing is what makes it an anointing oil. except God instruct you to use olive oil or some sort .
