The vice president says the population growth is "handsomely" ahead of the economic growth figures
Nigeria has to act fast to develop a sustainable food system as it faces a population growth that is “handsomely” ahead of its economic growth figures, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said Tuesday.

Mr Osinbajo said the need to create a food system that works “has never been more urgent and more existential” as the country’s poverty levels has worsened particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout.

The vice president made these remarks during the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), organised by the Nigerian government in collaboration with the United Nations, which was held virtually with over 700 participants in attendance.

The dialogue was organised with the hope of identifying food systems challenges from multiple perspectives, thereby highlighting priority actions for Nigeria’s food systems and providing pathways towards ensuring resilient and sustainable food systems in Nigeria by 2030.

“Malnutrition and unhealthy dietary practices create unique threats to health and productivity for generation after generation,” Mr Osinbajo said.

Mr Osinbajo described the dialogue as a crucial dialogue that should be all encompassing in order for Nigerians, policy makers and key stakeholders to benefit maximally.

He said the dialogue will help to raise global awareness and shape global commitments towards mobilising food systems, so as to address hunger, reduce diet related diseases and strengthen primary health systems across boards.

Mr Osinbajo explained that it is a significant challenge to produce enough food for a rapidly growing population, especially given the changes required in modernization of farming practices, mechanization, and reduction of post-harvest losses.

“But there are also questions around ensuring environmentally sustainable production practices, creating empowering jobs and livelihoods, and building capacities to ensure sustainable and healthy food systems,” he said.

These issues, he said, require expertise and experience, and also, the views of those who will literally be at the receiving end of these plans.

“In other words, at these dialogues, we don’t just want to hear the experts, we want to hear those at the receiving end, for whom all these plans are being made – the people of the country across all strata of society,” he said.

Mr Osinbajo urged that the food we produce and eat, how we produce and eat, should be environmentally friendly and not destroy the environment for future generations.
He said “That seems simple enough. Aside from the inherent difficulties of recommending dietary changes, which is habit-forming and for most people, there are tough questions about what practices make sense in a high-income country and what will make sense in a developing country.”

“Health is wealth” Eating a balanced diet has umpteen benefits. These benefits are exceptional and long-term. That is why it is vital that we understand the benefits of eating healthy and the impact it has on our well-being.

Trash talk. Always trying to sound correct politically.
We don't need any sudden plan. We had the cassava surge under Adeshina the former agric minister but it was allowed to lose momentum.

Population control but the FG is not ready so let's enjoy the rollercoaster. They're afraid of the extremist in the North. There's no place on earth with high population of children without parental cares, living in poverty, in the name of Almajiri" like the North. FG is not ready to address the issues.

Why is it that Nigerian government can never talk about family planning? Such a simple concept that will go a very long way to solving majority of Nigeria's woes.

As it is , why should an unemployed man have 5 wives and 25 kids to then tell us he must have more kids because "children are a blessing from God"?

We are swimming against the tides, and will never win, if we don't tackle the unfeasible population growth of Nigeria because universal challenges exist related to fast growing population having to share dwindling resources. The population of the world is growing too rapidly for the resources of the world to cater for.

The problem is then far worse in Nigeria that is poor, infrastructurally comatose, creating far less jobs to even employ a minimally optimal number of Nigerians and with issues of poor healthcare, illiteracy, terrorism, crime, corruption etc. We need to start confronting major problems rather than dancing around them because we are surely going down if we continue doing the later.

I visited my families cashew farm at Deklina and ajiollo in kogi state and I wanted to cry.

Adults were playing around like children, waiting to get scrap from the farm. I mean a farm that is bigger than Ota farm twice combined.

The level of poverty I saw there, made me ask God some personal questions like;

DO YOU REALLY EXIST

Despite the government being very useless, Nigerian citizens on their own are extremely irresponsible. Giving birth like insects in an economy that holds nothing. Even slum residents are procreating like swarms. Horrible.

Osibade should quietly resign. He has been pushed to the wall. He should save his manhood and resign

Imagine a v.p that can't buy toiletries for his office if its not approved by a subordinate?? Even atiku, in face of all the open attacks to vilify him wasn't subjected to such ridicule.

Save your manhood oga

Bros, can you be straight forward?

What we need now is your government's sincere action against killer herdsmen.

Many farmers have had their crops destroyed by killer herdsmen. Your government did nothing about it.

Many farmers have been killed on their farm, while trying to produce this same food you are talking about, your government did nothing about it.

Many farmers are afraid to go to farm to harvest their crops. They have abandoned their farms because they are not protected from killer herdsmen.

You are talking about action, but your government neglected this all important, obviously needed action from your government.

And since your government has failed to act, the people are ready to protect themselves against your government and their killer herdsmen.

Yet under you and Buhari supervisor, farmers are being killed by Fulani herdsmen and Boko haram, in fact, they need approval from either the military or herdsmen before they can go to farm.

You guys should continue, God is watching.

Maybe you should employ MaiAim's strategy to help the country undecided

1. Subsidised prices of food for Lagosians (Through radical Agricultural policies)

When Lagos had a collaboration with Kebbi state on the production of Lagos lake rice.
I said to myself, what a beautiful innovation.

If given Mai Aim the opportunity, Mai Aim will invest your money in other states. We will buy their lands, Employ their people and ours to work on Lagos farmlands in the 35 other states.

Mai Aim will make sure these food supplies to Lagos state are subsidised for Lagosians.

I envisage greediness/ corruption situations from people who are saddled with the production. I can't do this alone...

Lagos state will by 2023 have an agency. Lagos state Food production and supplies agency (Lasfopsa)
They are to sell only to food Malls cited inside lagos only. They are also to oversight the sales integrity.

Which gives room to Number 2.

Mai Aim will invest on every Senior citizens (55 & above ) of the state, through Agriculture and more.

If Nigeria can invest in massive Agricultural reforms that allows all Farmers sell directly to the Government who in turn sell finished food back to residents. More employment through processing companies and Government farms. Food security on another hand.

MaiAim is for Agricultural reforms.

which kind errand boy be this,he should just sit down somewhere like atiku did when he was vp and stop this self ridicule.he can't be forcing himself to be relevant in this administration.
he just said poverty rate is increasing after he said the have lifted 100m people out of poverty.his sense is a function of his height.
