How does one become a River State militant? Or how does one qualify for this money?
Re: Rivers Woos Militants With 1 Million Naira Each by GNature(m): 11:46am On Jul 06, 2007
What is the guarantee that once given this money, the militants wouldn't continue with their practice ?

Is there any effort put in place to ensure that they are completely disarmed ?

Re: Rivers Woos Militants With 1 Million Naira Each by vigasimple(m): 10:10pm On Jul 08, 2007
It simply shows how daft is our government(in this case the state govt)

1. this encourage militantcy and reward them either in the niger delta or elsewhere

2. people who are not militant and law abiding would think it pay's to be a militant and by inference a rogue and armed bandit.

The militants are the equivalent of politicians (in their case using guns to blackmail and make a monetary demands)

I gurranteed you paying each and everyone of them including all the law abiding citizen of those niger delta states 1 million each it will never solve their problem

Take for example if 1000 people were to be paid 1million each it will amount to 1Billion, and are there not more than 1000 or more militant.

If the govt of the day were to invest 1 billion in each local govt of the niger delta state the impact would be seen and clear and people will get training and jobs

Foolishness sometimes breed stupidity, afterall those politicians are foolish to be there in the first place. they are not capable, they knew it.

may God in his infinite mercy help us. Militants are just rogues, who are blackmailers and demand monies, they should be campaiging openly and showing the country their plights, abduction etc will just have the reverse effect of sympathy from any other part of the country.

MAKING MONEY FROM HOSTAGE TAKING: A CHRONOLOGY OF 3 MONTHS RECORD and over 3 Billion Naira paid to militants as ransom to release the expatriates.
Do you think Nigerian Stock Exchange can yeild this kind of dividend? I find it dificult to understand at times what they are fighting for.

In another development just of recent a 3-year old British girl was kidnapped and was just released yesterday. Do have to believe that this little girl has been part of their problem.

The oil sector of our economy is now in shambles as so many expatriates has migrated to neighbouring Ghana and chose to operate from that country straight to their oil Rigs in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

In the past three months major attacks and kidnappings involving the Nigerian Oil Industry by militants has been recorded.

On March 14 2007 militants released two Italian workers held since Dec. 7, 2006.

In April 4, a Dutch manager for German Building contractor Bilfinger Berger, kidnapped in Port Harcourt on March 23, is released while a British worker abducted from the Bulford Dolphin oil rig on March 31, is freed.

Two Lebanese employed by Setraco, who were abducted in Bayelsa on April 2 are also released.

On April 7, Gunmen kidnapped two Turkish engineers from their car in Port Harcourt one work for Merpa, a Turkish firm that maintains Telecommunications on oil platforms.

On April 27, Gunmen killed two policemen in an unsuccessful kidnap attempt in Port Harcourt as the officers are escorting a convoy of vehicles camping expatriate staff to work.

On May 1,
the workers day four Italians, an American and a Croat are kidnapped from an offshore oil facility operated by U.S. based Chevron in Bayelsa state they were freed on June 2.

On May 3, Gunmen kidnapped 20 foreign workers in three attacks in the Niger Delta, but 8 are freed within hours

May 5, Gunmen abducted a British oil worker from Trident 8 rig operated by US. Based Transocean off the coast of Bayelsa. Separately, gunmen abducted a Belarussian woman, a manager of Britain’s compass group, from outside her home in Port Harcourt’s exclusive G.R.A district she was freed on May 16.

On May 8 - 3 South Koreans and 8 Filipinos are freed after being held for five days.

Rebels blow up three oil pipelines in the Niger Delta, following exit to halt production of 150,000 barrels per day feeding its brass export terminal. The movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta claims responsibility.

On May 19 - 2 Indian staff of Eleme petro chemical company majority owned by Indonesia’s Indorama are kidnapped by gunmen in Port Harcourt.

On May 22- 4 gunmen kidnapped a Lebanese man who is a financial controller at oil service company Nigercat in the city of Warri.

On May 24, gunmen kidnappped a Polish engineer near Warri, he is released on May 28. on May 25 9 oil workers are kidnapped from a ship off the Nigerian coast, those held are three American, four Britain, a South African and a Filipino are released on June 11.

May 30, - 4 US oil workers, kidnapped on May 9 from a base off the coast near Chevron Escravos crude export terminal are freed.

June 1, gunmen kidnap at least three senior managers of Indonesian chemical firm Indorama from their residential estate near Port Harcourt.

i'm from Rivers how can  i get in on this? tongue
The government for dey do better thing with this money, fix roads, build school, purify the water system whatever.  They should be trying to improve the Niger Delta for the people that live there, giving money out to those that renounce violence wont help the majority, it just puts a band-aid on the problem.  Because at the end of the day if things are not improving in the Niger Delta then activities such as kidnapping will continue.
Re: Rivers Woos Militants With 1 Million Naira Each by otokx(m): 10:41am On Jul 09, 2007
Grammer don full ground. If there is no meaningful development carried out by those vagabonds in power then there will continue to be an increase in the number of kidnappings. The people have learnt the hard truth, there is nothing good in forming mungu like Ken Saro Wiwa and Isaac Boro. We don't need dead legends whose villages remain inhabitable. Port Harcourt should have all and even more facilities that what obtains in FCT.

The above record was given by one of the managers in SHELL (Italian), and I lifted it as it was compiled by him, no addition, no subtraction
Re: Rivers Woos Militants With 1 Million Naira Each by ebos(m): 10:54am On Jul 09, 2007
I believe with the Italian record - that hostage taking has taken its toll in the Niger Delta region since two years now, even when I was in Port Harcourt, some of my friends used to lure me into that deadly job. Perpetrators of this act gives one excuse to the other such as under development, inability of the oil companies to honour memorandum of understanding (MOU) the continued incarceration of the leader of Niger Delta volunteer force(NDVF) Alhaji Asari-Dokubo now released.
The business of hostage taking has continued unabated as the Nigerian nation is highly embarrassed in the International Community on hostage taking. According to the Director of crisis events of the Niger Delta peoples Volunteer Force (NDVF) Engr. Eradir Udeng stated that so many government officials are the one sponsoring the militants and when they are sent to negotiate with the militants they too, equally makes their own money and by so doing it become a re-occurrence.

That little girl does not look like an oyimbo to me; it appears she is the daughter of a single parent who is now running things with a white man which is a rampant trend here in Port Harcourt.
Re: Rivers Woos Militants With 1 Million Naira Each by enolase(m): 11:06am On Jul 09, 2007
This is probably the stupidest thing any govt can do. People get together, kill people and cause problems for others in society. Now they are being rewarded.

Nigeria is the only country in the world where crime is rewarded. Anyway, what do you expect?

EFCC is busy jailing Yahoo boys, but can't seem to prosecute ex-governers who were known to be corrupt.

Sometime in 1998, my school then offered a reward of N20000 for any gun returned by suspected cult members. You know what happened?

Guys simply went to the notable Awka blacksmiths and produced pistols en masse at the rate of N5000 per pistol, returned same to the school and made a profit of N15,000 per pistol.  tongue

While the school authorities went to the press and displayed the supposedly returned pistols, boasting about how their attempts at eradicating cultism were succeeding, the cult guys were smiling all the way to the bank! shocked

Now we are seeing a repeat of something similar.

Shey Asari say RVSG dey owe am N137 million in a previous money for arms deal?

As Sonny Okosuns said in the early 80s in one of his songs, WHICH WAY NIGERIA?

Funny enough, the scene of the kidnapping was very close to where I live. I have once witnessed a kidnapping along the Agip Road close to Aka Base at Rumuolumeni in PH where an Italian and 2 Indians were seized by close to 17 gunmen.

Re: Rivers Woos Militants With 1 Million Naira Each by denex: 12:08pm On Jul 09, 2007
This new strategy is a modification of the original plan by the Obasanjo Administration to place bounties of N1million each on the head of each terrorist.

Below is an adaptation of a message I earlier sent to my brother Jakumo about this plan that was later called off because of the calculated casualty that would have ensued:

"it is with a heavy heart I write to you. I want you to realise that there are thousands of Niger-Deltans in the Nigerian Army. The fact that they are not members of MEND doesn't make them any less at home. They know the terrain as well as you and I. Do not also forget that a lot of Niger-Delta indigenes are getting sick and tired of their terrorist adventures. These locals will very easily be recruited as counter militia.

Let me tell you one thing you do not realise about southerners in general, they'll do about anything for money. Let alone when it's legal. If the government agrees to just put a ransom of N1 million on the head of each one of those Niger-Delta terrorists, I tell you, the military will have no need to go there. At that rate, N10 billion ($83 million) will get the heads of 10,000 terrorists. I want y'all to think about this.

Indigenes will kill and kill till there are no more to kill, and they will start killing innocent Ijaws to disguise them as members of MEND in order to get the bounty.

Let me make it clear to you that MEND and its associates made well over $4,500,000,000 last year from oil bunkering alone.
Those members of MEND that are lower in the chain of command and have not benefitted much from the bunkering money and the kidnap ransom will betray and kill their fellows to present them for N1 million on each head. Various methods will be used including poisoning. I'm telling you, at the end of the day, more than 2 million lives will be lost without the Nigerian military firing a single shot.

Let me tell you that before Obasanjo left, he was considering this option but for the massive collateral damage. Do you know how many starving youths will welcome this business opportunity? This new job opening opportunity? Those that have been terrorised by MEND over the past months.

Obasanjo would have even patted himself in the back and claim that he created jobs.

I keep saying that the government is trying to employ the least harsh method here and MEND keeps spreading propaganda that it is because of their weapons arsenal. No be only arsenal. Na Chelsea."

--End of Quote--

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I realise this is the state government's own plan to make that earlier idea less harsh. But even here you have to realise there's a catch.

This is nothing but a "remix" of the US witness protection program. The first few terrorists that give themselves up for the N1 million will provide information and help to track down and eliminate the other terrorist cells. It's not such a bad plan as well as it is thoroughly thought through.

God Help Nigeria.

Let us not go to raping issue, they have not been known for it. We know what they want, money and nothing else. These militants have mature people who monitor their activities and these mature men cannot allow their grand daudhter being raped. No much difference between a-3 year old baby and the one in the womb.

They still don't get it,it is not about money but concept,of what use is money if you don't know what it stands for.It is about empowerment, about precedence, about development, both mental and physical and most of all about taking control of their life and enviroment not just for niger delta but for the whole country,we have the resources to go round.I was watching a programme on nigeria television authority via BEN TV london today, about sanitation and flooding problems in amukoko lagos,if i were in their shoes,i will rather choose death than to live like that, not even rats live that way,all because of shortsightedness of what we call goverment.People should stand up demand what belongs to them,we are too afraid of the unknown, according legendary FELA,(i no wan die,my mama dey for house,i wan build house)Of what use is life,if you don't have fulfilment.
