Campus Rape: Covenant University & 'Zero Tolerance for Sexual Misconducts', sacks erring Staff.

Renowned Nigeria's Frontline Private Christian Mission Institution of Higher Education, Covenant University has again displayed her strong stance on 'Zero Tolerance against any form Sexual Misconducts' from any of her staff and students.

Few days ago, the Institution was widely reported on several online NEWS Media to have handed over one of her academic employees by name, Dr. Stephen Ukenna to the operatives of the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Police for prosecution following a report of an unlawful sexual assault on a 17-year old female student of the institution.

Emerging report from the institution now says the University Management has dismissed the erring lecturer with immediate effects as approved by the President of the University's board, Bishop David Oyedepo, who is also the Founder and Chancellor of the institution.

Dr. Stephen Ukenna who is an Alumnus of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria, with a PHD in Marketing, joined the employment of Covenant University in 2017 as a lecturer in the department of marketing.

He was reported to have immorally had a carnal knowledge of the female student who he had invited to his office where he reportedly committed the unethical act.

Reports have it that the heartbroken student went to report the lecturer's atrocity to the University Chaplain and also called her parents who later stormed the University Campus last Friday, same day of of the 19th matriculation ceremony of the institution, with a battalion of mobile Policemen to effect the arrest of the lecturer.

The management of Covenant University was unrestrained in swiftly tracking down and quickly handing over the lecturer to the Nigerian police for the law to have its full course, and distancing themselves from the unethical and criminal act Dr. Ukenna.

Covenant University has remained one of the forthright institutions of learning with unmistakable zero tolerance for sexual misconducts and offences from any of her staff or students, regardless of their personalities, ranks, positions, statuses and connections within and outside the University system.

This strong position of the institution has remained so since the inception of the University in 2002, as a good number of her past employees have been sacked over the years for sexual misconducts and atrocities.

Over the last ten years for instance, some of the key figures in the institution have been sacked:

Prof. Chidi Uhuegbu (Former Director of Academic Planning and HOD of Physics)

Prof.(Pst) Louis Egwari (Former Director of Covenant Research Center and Deputy Dean School of Natural Sciences)

Prof. Charles Irounnagbe (Former HoD of Sociology)

Dr. Muyiwa Oludayo (Former two-time Registrar, Dean of Students Affairs, Alumni President)

Dr. Fred Amadu (Senior Lecturer of Sociology) are a few recent notable staff amongst others laid off till date.

While the Institution's "zero tolerance" strong position on the case of sexual offences can be commended, it will be good if the institution can fashion out more innovative and proactive ways to prevent such atrocities from happening within its system in order to save the institution's reputation from being smeared on the national and international stage.

I just can't explain how someone that has risen to that height could just allow himself to be a victim of sexual scandal.
