To prevent military coup, on June 1999 the then President Olusegun Obasanjo retired over one hundred military and police officers. The sacked officers are those who had held political offices since 1985, the year Major General (later General) Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida who was the then Nigeria military Head of State took over power till May 28, 1999 during General Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar regime. The sacked military and police officers were formerly: military administrators or military state governors, ministers and chairman board of governors.
