How is Engine Oil made in Nigeria

Because of the metallic nature of engine parts, automobiles and other machines rely heavily on engine oil to keep their parts moving smoothly. Lubricant oil prevents moving parts from grinding against each other, resulting in wear and damage.

Individuals can now produce their own brand of lubrication oil as a result of research and research results that are available to the public; there are many brands in the market so that automobile and engine users can have different varieties to choose from depending on which brands work better for their engine parts.

Mineral and synthetic oils are the two basic types of lube oil. Mineral oils are made from naturally occurring petroleum, also known as crude oil. Polyalphaolefins, which are hydrocarbon-based polyglycols or ester oils, are used to make synthetic oils.

Although there are many different types of lube oils, mineral oils are the most commonly used because the supply of crude oil has made them cheap; additionally, a large body of data on their properties and use already exists. Another benefit of mineral-based lube oils is that they can be manufactured in a variety of viscosities.

In Nigeria, there is a high demand for lubricating oil. In the Nigerian market, engine oil is in high demand. Lubrication oil is used in a variety of machines, including automobiles, electric generators, grinding engines, and industrial machines. Engine oil is not one of those commodities that car owners, in particular, can do without. Nobody wants to jeopardize his engine's long life.

As previously stated, engine oil is used by a variety of machines. It is compatible with both gasoline and diesel engine oils, though in different grades. Petrol engine oil is used in passenger cars (light cars), whereas diesel engine oil is used in generators (small and large) as well as heavy cars (diesel cars).

Furthermore, the Lube market is divided into two major segments: automotive and industrial, with market shares of 70% and 30%, respectively.

The majority of competition is congregating in the first category. While cars, generators, and two or three wheelers account for 65% of the market in the automotive segment, diesel operated engines, trucks, and other heavy vehicles account for 35%.

One of the most important sectors of the petrochemical industry is lubricating oil and grease. The Nigerian lubricating oil and grease market has grown in size over the years.

Design of a Lubricant Project

The project can be launched on two plots of land. The factory structure must include five (5) major rooms: the Cloak Room, the Packaging Material Room, the Production Room, the Finished Product Room, and the Raw Material Room. The factory will be located within the compound where there will be no human residence.

The production of engine oil begins with the acquisition of base oil from refineries; the acquired base oil is then loaded into the blending plant, where additives such as detergents, anti-corrosive chemicals, and dispersants are added. To blend the oil with the chemicals, heating and agitation are used simultaneously.

Production Advice.

The part that interests me most is the last sentence on the first image; our formulation result.

However, this formulation was based on 750 naira per liter from our end.

Which we ourselves sells at 1000 naira per liter to bulk buyers, who in turn sell 1500 or more per liter after packaging.

If for any reason your cost is higher, say because of the cost of chemicals in your area, the best advice in making profit applies here.

"Get your raw materials from the cheapest place and sell your product in your expensive area."

We give all these tips and more to our customers when you purchase formulas or products from us.

See you.

PS.
Second picture is the result of the same formulation from our own end.

Profitability of the Lubrication Production Industry

A ton of lubricant will cost a maximum of $700 to produce. With the current increase in petroleum product prices, a ton will be sold for at least 2,000, implying a gross profit of 800 per ton. This investment guarantees an annual profit of 200,000 with a mini-plant producing 1 ton per day for 200 days. Without a doubt, this is a good investment opportunity.

Please keep in mind that the above estimate varies depending on the current exchange rate and petroleum price.

Design of Engine Oil Production

Although all grades and brands of engine oils serve the same purpose of lubricating engine parts, it is important to note that knowledge of the various engine oil designs is required.

The manufacturer of lubrication oil must know what brand he is creating in order to target a specific group of buyers. I will share with you the major designs or types of engine oil you can produce.

Diesel engine oil is classified into two grades (monograde and multigrade) Monogrades are widely used in Nigeria, but people are starting to appreciate multigrades.

The viscosity of the oil is determined by its grade. The viscosity of oil is a measurement of its thickness. Multigrade oils are typically rated using two numbers that indicate: (1) the thinness (viscosity or how runny it is!) at low temperature (W= winter) and (2) the thickness (viscosity or how sticky it is!) at high temperature.

The first number represents the weight of the oil when it is cold, while the second number represents the weight of the oil when it is operating at its optimal temperature.

Ingredients (Raw Materials) Used in the Production of Engine Oil in Nigeria

In Nigeria, raw materials for the production of lubricants are readily available. Nigeria is known as one of the world's major crude oil producers, producing an average of 1.16 million barrels of crude oil per day and holding over 15 billion barrels in reserves.

The country has four refineries, the most recent of which is located near Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and has the capacity to refine 450,000 barrels of crude oil per day. These refineries can easily produce base oil, which is a byproduct of petroleum refining. This ensures a steady supply of raw materials for this project.

In layman's terms, let me now show you two of the categories of these raw materials required to produce engine oil. They are as follows: The base oil and the synthetic oil.

Additive enhancement

Base oil is a viscous byproduct of petroleum refining. This is available at refineries and petroleum product distribution points across the country. Enhancement additives are essential substances such as detergents, anti-corrosive chemicals, and dispersants that are added to the product to give it special functions on the engines it will run on.

However, there are two types of blending methods:

Cold blending as well as

Blending on the stove,

Some oil companies use the term "line blending," but this is simply another way of saying "cold blending." It is not difficult to determine which is superior; hot blending is widely recognized as the best when it comes to correctly bonding all of the components; cold blended products frequently have far less shelf life due to additive drop out.

Blending by weight vs. blending by volume is another critical factor in blending; the specific gravity (SG) of an oil changes relatively little when compared to changes in volume over different temperature ranges.

Hot blending has costs associated with it in the form of producing heat, whereas cold blending does not, so cold blenders have a cost advantage in the market but typically produce a lower quality product. When it comes to producing a better product, blending by weight is by far the better option.

To summarize, the oil is mixed with additives in order to achieve the desired physical properties (such as the ability to withstand low temperatures).

Just a thought to encourage people here..

With the coming onboard of the Dangote Petrochemical plant. Raw materials for making acids, plastics and other products should be easier and more affordable.
Engine oil production should also be easier once refinery comes onboard.

@Olaide,

Thank you Olaide for that information. Infact we are excited at the possibilities of the petrochemical value chain and convergent benefits. The Dangote Refinery will boost output and reduce our total import.

The importance of lubricant cannot be over-emphasized. Lubricants reduce friction and protect machinery from premature wear. Good lubricants ensure less maintenance, less energy consumption, increased production, and a longer asset life span for the users. In addition to extending the life of your machinery, producing and dealing with the right brand of lubricants will provide you more income and customer loyalty.

Start the Production of Adhesives and Sealants (Glues, Gums, and Paste etc)

An additional thriving and profitable business venture in the chemical industry that an entrepreneur who is looking towards launching a business should consider starting is to go into the production of adhesives and sealants. There is a large market for glues, gums, and paste etc as long as you are able to favorably compete with other manufacturer of same products. This type of business is a business that can be started on a small scale with low start – up capital.
