On November 20, 1999, the Nigerian military, reportedly acting on the orders of then President Olusegun Obasanjo, invaded Odi, a predominantly Ijaw community in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and killed many, burning the community to the ground. The attack was said to be in response to the killing of 12 policemen and an ambush of soldiers by a militia that used the civilian population of Odi as its cover. The Nigerian military launched a ‘total offensive’ on the small town, killing all in their path, including unarmed civilian residents of the community. By the end of the two days, about 2,483 persons – mainly women, children and the elderly were massacred. Thousands more fled in canoes or on foot to the creeks and forests where they hid, some up to a week with no food or shelter. Every building in the town except the bank, the Anglican church and the health center was burned to the ground. The government however disputed the deaths, claiming that only 43 people died, including 8 soldiers. Human Rights Watch concluded that "the soldiers must certainly have killed tens of unarmed civilians and that figures of several hundred dead are entirely possible." The Environmental Rights Action claims that nearly 2500 civilians were killed. In February 2013 (14 years after), the Federal High Court ordered the Federal Government to pay N37.6 billion compensation to the people of Odi. The case led to the payment of N15 billion from the Goodluck Jonathan led administration as out of court settlement. It is widely believed that the Odi massacre birthed the spread of militancy in the entire Niger Delta.

The FG under the PDP led Administration paid over 99billion as damages after the court judgement in favor of Odi. Only few elites from that part share the money. 4 Likes |

Obasanjo is the real Satan! He started all these government massacres and killings at odi.. People always overlook his atrocious credentials, but the truth is that Obasanjo is the person who empowered the fulani most in Nigeria. From Shagari to Buhari, he went out of his way to oil the fulani political machine, just because they saved his life during the counter coup.. He eliminated middle belt officers who were dominating northern politics post war after the Dimka coup and practically handed over the country to the sons of Fodio. OBJ and his deputy Atiku really wreck this country. No civilian government started it all other than them. I still wonder why OBJ is walking free up till today despite his corruption and atrocities. I guess this is Nigeria. |
